"Dog video transcript"
Dog video transcript We’re based up here in Alconbury where we have the purpose built kennel block which we inherited from the US air force and we have space for 17 dogs here. The dogs come in here when the handlers are on leave. The section is made up of 16 general purpose dogs and six drugs, cash and weapon search dogs and four explosive dogs. The dogs all live at home with their handlers, they live in kennels in the handlers back garden and each handler has an issued vehicle to transport their dog around job to job. This is one of the police dog vehicles, it’s a normal Mondeo, we can leave the dogs in, we can close the vehicle up, secure it, do what we have to do away from the dogs, but we can leave them in the vehicle secure with the air conditioning on so they’re nice and cold on a summer’s day. This is the run we have which is the back of the dogs kennels so they have some exercise whilst they’re away in the kennels. As we walk round here you can see the large runs where the dogs are placed out for a bit of exercise. My name is Andy Brumby, I’m the full-time dog instructor at Cambridgeshire Police dog section. My responsibility is to make sure all the dogs are up to the standard as set out by the home office. They have to be licensed every year in order to work on the streets. Every month, every single dog on the section is put through two days of continuation training to make sure they maintain that standard, they are safe to use and they’re all checked out and all the exercises we do. One of those being a straight chase where they are sent to stop somebody that’s running away they’re given several challenges, given the opportunity to stop and if they don’t the dogs are sent. They stop them there until the handler gets there. We also do lots of other exercises tracking, searching for people, agility exercises and I’m just about to run away and get bitten! “Police officer, stop stop, I’ll send the dog, stop stop” All our dog handlers treat their dogs as friends, they’re not just animals and tools of the trade they’re part of the family and they’re treated as such. We hope you’ve enjoyed this video and have an insight of what we do here at the dog section.
