                                             Preface
    The 4th International Conference on Magnesium (ICM4) will be held during “IUMRS 11th
International Conference in Asia” at Qingdao International Convention Center, Qingdao,
Shandong Province, China, from September 25 to 28, 2010. This conference is aimed to continue
the highly successful first, second and third International Conference on Magnesium held in China,
in 2004, 2006 and 2008.
    The world is facing energy crisis, resource crisis and environmental pollution, and these
challenges have become increasingly intensified day by day. Material scientists around the world
have been working hard to explore new materials and new processes with an aim to make more
contribution in finding solution to these major crises. Magnesium, as a green metal material in
21century, is playing a more and more significant role in solving these crises, owing to its distinct
properties. Presently the world has attached great importance to the development and application
of magnesium alloys. The governments of many countries, such as China, Germany, US, Australia,
Japan, Korea, have all strengthened their supports to the projects on magnesium and its alloys. In
industrial circles, the number of enterprises engaged in manufacturing and application of
Magnesium products has been growing rapidly. As structural materials, magnesium alloys are
extensively used in transport and 3C products; as energy materials and bio-materials, magnesium
and its alloys or composites have shown great prospect for future application as well.
      Undoubtedly, there is great opportunity for the development and application of magnesium
alloys. However, the high cost of wrought products and complex casting products seriously
restricts wider application, besides, in certain important industrial fields, the properties of
magnesium alloys are not yet satisfying the market demand. In order to solve the above problems,
scientists in the world have been making great efforts and rapid progress has been achieved. The
conference will provide a good platform for the exchange and discussion of new ideas and the
latest achievements related to magnesium and its alloys. The topics of the conference include
primary production technologies, recycling, alloy development, phase transformations, product
manufacturing processes, mechanical and physical properties, welding and joining, corrosion and
surface finishing, designs and applications, etc.. There are more than 200 technical papers
contributing to this conference.A special forum, “Opportunity and Challenge of Mg Industry in
Asia”, will be arranged during the conference. Many world-class researchers and directors of
national projects on magnesium and its alloys have been invited to attend this forum.

    ICM4 are mainly supported by Chongqing University, the Institute of Metals (IMR, CAS) and
Chongqing Academy of Science & Technology (CAST), China. The National Engineering
Research Center for Magnesium Alloys (CCMg) in Chongqing University is one of the largest Mg
research centers in the world with more than 150 researchers. Chongqing Academy of Science &
Technology (CAST) is the largest industrial research institution in western China with nine
institutes and eight centers. The Institute of Metal Research (IMR) is an important R & D base for
advanced materials in China. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to
CCMg, CAST and IMR.
