Youth Hall DIY SOS – Bishops Waltham Guides and Scouts unite in
community project to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee
Members from both Bishops Waltham’s Guide Unit and Scout Group mobilised over the
weekend of the 25-26th, uniting to join forces in aid of the community of Bishops Waltham.
Over 100 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Leaders and Parents
participated in the renovation of Bishops Waltham Youth Club. This included sanding,
painting, cleaning, clearing, digging, sawing and sweeping in order to help get the hall up
and running again.
This project is part of the celebration of the Queens Diamond Jubilee where Scouts and
Guides across Hampshire have been challenged to work together on community projects
like this one, which will make a real difference to local people.
Bishops Waltham has been without a permanent location for its youth for some time, after
the hall fell into disrepair and has been unused since a fire in 2008.
The President of Meon Valley Scout District, Brandy Blunt, and a small group of dedicated
volunteers have taken on the project to open it again. Fortunately Brandy, a builder by
trade, has called in some favours and has been putting in many hours himself to get the
work finished – new kitchen, repairs to the roof, new boiler, refitting the toilet and new
Hopefully if it all goes to plan the Youth Hall should reopen to the young people of Bishops
Waltham once again in March 2012.
