Verbal Hands On Time Capsule
Document Sample

Time Capsule (When the team enters the room, tell them this is a verbal hands-on problem) This is a two-part problem. In part 1, you will have 6 minutes to make your solutions. In part 2, you will have 3 minutes to present your solutions to the judges. You may talk and ask questions as any time, but time will continue. There is a set of materials in front of each of you. No other materials may be used and you may not share materials with your team members. Your problem is for each of you to make something for a time capsule for the year 2011. On the table in front of you is a card with a word on it. Your item must represent this word in some way. In part two, you will each take turn explaining your items to the judges. Score will be as follows: Creativity of the items for the time capsule 1-15 each How well the items relate to their word 1-10 each Creativity and quality of each team members’ presentation of their item 1-10 each Creative use of materials 1-15 each For judges only Give each team member a set of materials to work with. Each set should be fairly different from the others. Give them things such a construction paper, pipe cleaners, beads, string, magic markers, etc. Also give each of them some nontraditional items. Use what you have, but make sure to give every enough items to work with. Place a card in front of each team member with a word on it. My suggestions for words is “music,” “fashion,” “cars,” “sports,” and “food.” You can use anything you want, though. My intent here is to educate the students about subjective scoring. Once you score, sit down with the kids and go over their points and talk about ways to improve things. Make sure to talk to them about the importance of reading what the scoring guidelines say. It is also important to point out the major difference between scoring a 5 and an 8. A simple score sheet follows below: Time Capsule Score Sheet Creativity of each item (1-15) 1. ________ 2. ________ 3. _________ 4. ________ 5. _________ Total: _________ How well the items relate to their word (1-10) 1. ________ 2. ________ 3. _________ 4. ________ 5. _________ Total: _________ Creativity and quality of each team members’ presentation of their item (1-10) 1. ________ 2. ________ 3. _________ 4. ________ 5. _________ Total: _________ Creative use of materials (1-15) 1. ________ 2. ________ 3. _________ 4. ________ 5. _________ Total: _________ Add each total to get grand total (225 possible): __________________
