Higher Doctorate Application
This form is for Higher Doctorate Applicants only
The Higher Doctorate degree is of a higher standing than either a masters degree or the degree of Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) and is awarded for work that makes an original, substantial and distinguished contribution to
knowledge in a field with which the faculty is concerned. Work submitted for the degree normally comprises
publications that have appeared in the forms of books or papers in scholarly journals that are then presented in the
form of a thesis. The degree will give the applicant authoritative standing in that field and the right to general
recognition of this standing by scholars in the field.

In order to qualify for admission, a Higher Doctorate applicant must:
Have qualified, not less than seven years previously, for a degree of the university;
Be a current member of the Monash teaching or research staff, and have been so for not less than six
consecutive years full-time equivalent; or
Have qualified, not less than seven years previously for a degree of another educational institution and have
had a close research association with the university for not less than six years.
The Higher Doctorate is normally awarded based on the examination of materials submitted to the appropriate faculty
board, after a designated period of time has elapsed since the undergraduate degree was completed. Candidates for
the Higher Doctorate do not enrol in a course.
At this level, examiners shall certify to the faculty board concerned that the published work:
Makes an original, substantial and distinguished contribution to the knowledge in the field concerned; and
Gives the applicant authoritative standing in the field and the right to general recognition of this standing by
scholars in the field.
A panel of examiners examines these works and a determination is made regarding the candidates suitability for the
award of the Higher Doctorate.
Research Graduate School Committee Higher Doctorate Regulations:
The application process comprises two main stages:
In ‘Stage A’ applications for the degree are made to the appropriate Faculty for initial assessment.
If a sufficient case is established the applicant is accepted as a candidate for the degree.
In ‘Stage B’ the work is sent by the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS) to three external
examiners for assessment.
Stage A: Submission of Application for Initial Assessment
The following are to be submitted to the appropriate Faculty for initial assessment:
Higher Doctorate application form
Application fee of $AUD1000 (Cheque made payable to Monash University)
Three copies of the work.
The Faculty will convene a Higher Doctorate Committee to determine whether the applicant satisfies the
admission requirements and whether the work submitted is prima facie worthy of examination.
Stage B: Examination Following Successful Initial Assessment
Where the Faculty Higher Doctorate Committee determines that the applicant qualifies for admission to
the Higher Doctorate degree, the applicant will be formally admitted to candidature and required to
provide to the Monash Research Graduate School:
Four copies of the work submitted to the Faculty
A cheque for $AUD3000 payable to Monash University
A list of any persons he or she does not want to examine their work.
Examination of the work
Three external examiners will be nominated by the Faculty Higher Doctorate Committee and appointed
by the Research Graduate School Committee to formally examine the submitted work.
Award of Degree
The Research Graduate School Committee determines whether or not the degree will be awarded
following receipt of the examiners’ reports.

Section 3 – Comments
Signature of Chair of HDC:
Note: The Higher Doctorate Committee must notify both the applicant and the Research Graduate School
Committee of the outcome of the application for the higher doctorate.
Where the application was successful the relevant faculty should notify the applicant of their qualification for
admission to the degree and the requirement to submit four copies of the work to the Monash Research Graduate
School for formal examination.
The Higher Doctorate Committee is responsible for nominating three experienced and expert examiners for the

Where an application for a higher doctorate is unsuccessful, the applicant has a right to appeal (see Section 8 of the
higher doctorate regulations).
