Option 6: CLAS

1. CLAS: Connected Learning Advisory Service
2. CLAS Overview (ref: http://enterprisewin.det.nsw.edu.au/schoolsclas/clas/index.shtm )

The Connected Learning Advisory Service has been designed for teachers to individually self assess their strengths and weaknesses in the
integration of ICT into teaching and learning activities. If appropriate to your situation, a strong collegial network within your school could be
developed by discussing and sharing experiences and pathways.

CLAS has two main parts. The Using ICT Framework and online self-assessment tool (MyMap) help teachers evaluate how they use ICT for
teaching and learning. Teachers can create their own log of evidence of ICT capability and identify aspects of their practice for further
development.

The learning pathways provide links to examples of what other teachers are doing, online resources and professional learning activities to
help teachers explore new strategies for use with their students.

There is no set path to follow when using CLAS, but to make best use of it you may find one of the following starting points helpful:
 MyMap - by using the MyMap tool you can assess your skills in one or more areas to prioritise and plan professional learning.
 Using ICT skills Framework – by looking at the framework you can identify those areas/domains of most interest to you.
 Pathways - by accessing the domains in the pathways section, you can find resources and research to support professional
learning to meet your own identified needs.

3. Using CLAS to inform whole school professional learning in ICT:

The Connected Learning Advisory Service can provide effective support for whole-school professional learning around the effective use of
information and communication technology for teaching and learning.

Within CLAS, the Using ICT Skills Framework can help teachers and Principals develop a shared understanding of what it means to use ICT
well to support student learning.

Built on the Framework, the MyMap tool can help Principals identify specific professional learning needs at the school level. A number of
Principals have dedicated part of a staff development day to a school-level implementation of MyMap. Once all – or a significant number – of
teachers in a school have completed the MyMap self-assessment tool, a Principal can request aggregated trend data. This does not identify
individual teachers, but gives a picture of the knowledge and skills of the staff as a whole.

4. Accessing the MyMap Tool

To access the MyMap tool staff will need to log into the DET Portal. The CLI site can be accessed using the following link or through the ‘My
Websites’ tab in each staff members portal. Choose CLAS (schools) in the top menu, then MyMap Tool in the top right hand menu and
allow the program to load. http://cliwww.det.nsw.edu.au/cli/index.shtm
The self assessment process will save information as you go and does not need to be completed in one sitting.

                                                                                                                                                 1
Pedagogy – Options: In touch with new tools

5. Useful resources provided to assist with implementing a school wide ICT assessment

         school ICT capacity.

6. Possible workshop outlines

Please note: Both the short and longer versions of the CLAS workshop need to be presented in a one-to-one environment.
