Symphonic Metal Symphonic metal is a term used to describe metal music that has symphonic elements. Elements that sounds similar to a classical symphony. Symphonic metal is both a genre of metal and a name given to several subgenres of other metal genres. The genre refers to bands that combine aspects of varying metal genres, with signature female-led vocals and operatic/classical themes to give the music a feeling of being a symphony. When referring to bands from other genres, it refers to bands that use minor classical and operatic themes in the bands music similar as to what is found in the symphonic metal genre, to show they are more "symphonic" than normal bands of their genre. "Symphonic" can also describe metal with elements resembling non-symphonic classical music. Nightwish is a Finnish Symphonic metal band formed in 1996 in the town of Kitee. Nightwish is considered one of the bands responsible for the rise in popularity of Symphonic metal at the end of the 1990s. Therion is a Swedish symphonic metal band. Beginning as a death metal band, they later turned to combining orchestral elements with their metal music, employing heavy use of choirs and classical musicians, not only as additions to but also as integral parts of the composition.Therion's music takes its themes from different mythologies and is based on concepts ranging from occultism, magic and ancient traditions and writings After Forever is a symphonic metal band from the Netherlands, which relies on the use of both soprano vocals and death grunts. Their music is also influenced by classical music. After Forever was originally assembled in 1995 under the name Apocalypse. Glam Metal Glam metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal music that arose in the late 1970s - early 1980s in the United States. It was a dominant genre in popular rock music throughout the 1980s and early 1990s (c.1983-1992). Generally, glam metal has hedonistic lyrics, often focuses on sex, alcohol, and drugs, and many of the first wave bands had songs pertaining to the occult. Musically, glam metal songs often featured distorted guitar riffs, shred guitar solos, anthemic choruses, hard hitting drumming, and complementary bass Bon Jovi is a hard rock band originating from Sayreville, New Jersey. Fronted by lead singer and namesake Jon Bon Jovi, the group originally achieved large-scale success in the 1980s. The band has continued its success as one of the world's most successful rock acts throughout the 1990s and 2000s, selling more than 37 million albums in the United States and over 120 million albums worldwide. Def Leppard is an English hard rock band from Sheffield who formed in 1977 as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. On the strength of their albums, Pyromania and Hysteria, Def Leppard became one of the top selling rock bands of the 1980s. Ratt is an American glam metal band that formed in San Diego and enjoyed significant commercial success during the 1980s. The band is most notable for their 1984 smash hit single, "Round and Round". Though they lost publicity in the early 90s during the rise of grunge, they were instrumental in forming the Los Angeles metal scene in the 80s Progressive Metal Progressive metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music which blends the powerful, guitar-driven sound of metal with the complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, and intricate instrumental playing of progressive rock. Some progressive metal bands are also influenced by jazz fusion and classical music. Like progressive rock songs, progressive metal songs are usually much longer than standard rock songs, and they are often thematically linked in concept albums. First and probably the most well known progressive metal band is Dream Theater, they are known for their technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines. They have Released 10 Albums and have gotten a RIAA Gold for there album Images and Words. They have sci-fi based lyrics and take influence from many progressive rock and metal bands including Dream Theater. Symphony X is an American progressive metal band from New Jersey founded in 1994 by guitarist Michael Romeo. They play in a very syncopated, progressive fashion, also incorporating elements of symphonic metal and power metal into their sound. Their music contains strong neo-classical elements in line with the music of Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and other influential neo-classical metal artists.
