 ASME MET DEPARTMENT HEADS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (METDHC) MEETING
  2006 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition
                              Chicago, IL

The 2006 Winter METDHC meeting was held on Sunday November 5, 2006, 1:00 – 3:00
PM, Lake Huron Room at the Chicago Hilton.

   1. The meeting was called to Order at 1:15 pm by J. Hartin, Purdue University,
      METDHC Chair.
          a. Minutes from the Summer 2006 METDHC meeting were approved.
   2. ABET Update (report from the Committee on Technology Accreditation, CTA) –
      J. Hartin
          a. Discussed the ‘Participation Project’ and the competency models for
              ABET evaluators. This will be piloted by ASME. There is a need for
              consistency in evaluators. This includes recruitment, training and
              evaluation.
          b. New MET Criteria was approved by the ASME CTA, the TAC of ABET,
              and the ABET Board. This criteria is now open for public comment.
          c. Discussed the METDHC / CTA liaison. The METDHC and CTA will
              work together to identify a liaison from the CTA to maintain
              communication between the two committees.

   3. Joe Rencis, Professor and Head, Mechanical Engineering, University of Arkansas
      discussed the upcoming “Tips for Tenure and Promotion: A Symposium for New
      and Prospective Faculty.”

   4. Department Heads Forum – Mo Hosni
         a. Invitation to attend the ME Department Heads Forum scheduled for
            Monday, 11/6/06 from 8:30 – 10:30 am in the Chicago Continental
            Ballroom A, Lobby Level.

   5. A. Bentow distributed a handout for the 2007 International Mechanical
      Engineering Education Conference, Dorado, Puerto Rico, March 23-27, and
      encouraged everyone to attend. http://www.asmeconferences.org/meed2007/

   6. A. Bentow discussed the NSF grant for Advanced Placement in engineering and
      asked for volunteers of who would like to be interviewed by John Hopkins. T.
      Brower volunteered.

   7. METDH Executive Committee Elections/Membership
          a. Discussed terms for members at large. 5 members were elected to at-
             large-membership at the last meeting: John Williams – secretary; John
             Sweigert, S. Verma, Wes Grebski, Kevin Cook – members at large. We
             need to determine the term dates for all members.
          b. Discussed that Operation Guide needs to be updated into new ASME
             format.
          c. Action Items: R. Dandu will get correct names and contact information
             for new committee members; J. Hartin will contact them to make sure that
             they are still interested in being on the committee; A. Bentow will update
             the roster and work on a draft of a revised Operation Guide.

   8. METDH Technical Sessions at Congress 2007
        a. A. Bentow will get in contact with ASME staff person that is responsible
           for technical sessions at Congress (Stacy Cooper) and give her T.
           Brower’s contact information as organizer of the sessions.
        b. These technical sessions are planned to be under the umbrella of the other
           Engineering Education technical sessions currently led by A. Fakheri.

   9. Discussion of the value of METDHC. How can we build attendance at this
      committee meeting?
         a. Develop questions and distribute a survey to ask MET leadership what
             subjects and issues would draw more attendance to METDH meetings.
             (e.g. issues should we tackle in the next 3-4 years, events or development
             activities of interest, etc)
         b. Action Items: J. Hartin will develop questions for the survey and send to
             rest of the committee for input; J. Hartin and A. Bentow will identify
             target audience to send the survey to; A. Bentow will put survey on
             zoomerang.com; J. Hartin to present results at the 2007 ASEE June
             meeting.

Announcements:
Ben Sparks award committee. Need nominations of folks that contribute heavily to MET
education. Nominations due January 31, 2007.

   November 2007 at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress &
     Exposition, Seattle, Washington
