Use Each Evening on the Trail

-- Set up sleeping area away from cooking/eating area.
-- Clean up all food and trash around campsite.
-- Wash dishes and bodies at the sump.
-- Put all food, smellables, trash & unburnable garbage in the bear bag & hang at night.
-- Compact trash & garbage and give to staff at the next staffed camp.
-- Do not use any lotion, soaps, deodorants, shampoos or any other similar scented items
in the afternoon or evening.
-- Store all clothing, packs, stoves and fuel away from sleeping area.
-- Wear clean sleep clothing at night which does not have any food or other odor.
-- Never take a flash photo of a bear.
-- Never get between a bear and food or a bear and a cub and never approach or
provoke a bear.
Smellables include: Matches - Lighter - Stove - Fuel, All film cameras and extra film, Clothes that have spilled
food or drink on them, Condiment bag (all spices included), Chapstick - Use unscented only!
Deodorant/Antiperspirant*, Extra batteries, Feminine hygiene products (used or unused)**, First Aid kits &
Band Aids, All Food, candy bars, treats, trash, unburnable garbage, (check and double-check)**, Foot powder,
Insect repellant, Lip balm, Lotions of any kind, Medicine (place in boot if needed during the night such as
inhalers, etc.), Mole Skin or Mole Foam, Shampoos, Soaps (including Campsuds) - personal & laundry, SUMP
FRISBEE, Suntan lotion and sunscreen, Tobacco*, Toothbrushes and toothpaste, Unwashed dishes, Water
bottles (bears have associated these with sugary drink mix), and anything else that has a non-human odor.
