Ellen Renfro
President Welcome back students, parents, and staff!
Stephanie Pretlow It’s a time of change at Brunswick Elementary with a new PTO Board and a
Vice President-
Fundraising new principal. The PTO looks forward to your help and guidance to make this an
                    outstanding year.
Vicki Rohmiller Thank you to the former board members, April Socher, Allison Walser, Kathy
Vice President- Lukens, Lori Martin and Bonnie TeBeest. We also extend our thanks and farewells
Volunteer to Principal DeGrange.
Coordinator
I am very excited to take on the role of PTO President. The PTO’s goal this
Kim Boswell year is centered on the health, safety and enrichment of our children. The PTO has
Secretary always been an organization with a simple mission: Serve the school, enrich
education and foster community. As we continue this mission, we understand this
Lori Martin cannot be accomplished without you. Join us and take an active role.
Treasurer                   Please take a moment to look over the attached list of projects and activities;
we need help and input for each project. You decide how, where and when you can
help. If you have one hour or fifty to give this year, we are looking forward to
                    hearing from you.

“When PTO gets involved, children benefit. When you get involved, the child who
benefits most is your own.” Help us make a difference. If you have any questions
or comments, please feel free to contact any of us – we will be glad to help!

                    Sincerely,
                    Ellen Renfro

EcoPhones

Here at BES we are active in recycling. BES is conducting a recycling fundraiser. There’s nothing to buy.
We are simply asking you to protect the environment by donating your used cell phones, digital cameras,
and ink jet cartridges only. Your used items may be tax deductible and will be recycled in accordance with
EPA regulations or refurbished and sold. 100% of the proceeds will help fund for BES. According to the EPA
130 million cellular phones will go out of use this year. That creates an estimated 65,000 tons of electronic

be over 700 million retired phones in the U.S. Out of this number, 75% will be stored in people’s homes and
another 5% will be recycled. The final 20% will simply be thrown away as trash. For further information go to

www.schoolmall.com. There are hundreds of companies that School Mall is affiliated with, and when you make
a purchase BES receives a rebate. For example: JCPenney, gives 3%, Avon gives 8%, and Target gives 7 %.

WOW, what an easy way for our school to raise money. It is very easy to register; our school is already in the
system. Check it out and help our school, so we can help our children’s education!
Please contact Ellen Renfro, 240-344-9666, ellen@vizace.com, if you have any questions or suggestions.

Annual Holiday Shop
Each year the PTO will set up a holiday shop for the children to purchase their own gifts to give to their other
family members. The average gift will be from$1.00 to $10.00. This is a very exciting activity for the children
and gives them an opportunity to learn about the value of money and the act of giving. This year our
chairperson will be Elizabeth Riitano please contact her at 301-834-7640, if you should have any questions or
suggestions.

Aluminum Can Collection –
Recycle aluminum cans - We continue to recycle aluminum cans for cash that is used to provide lunches for
children who forgot their money on any given day and Kids Rule Club snacks. If you can contribute, bring them
to the “can collection bin” by the dumpsters and the loading dock. Mr. Connelly (a former BES parent) collects
the cans for us and takes them to the recycling center. Mrs. Hosfelt is our Aluminum Cans Coordinator this
year. Please contact Mrs. Hosfelt at (240) 236-2900 or email her at patricia.hosfelt@fcps.org, if you have
any questions or suggestions.

What does it mean to become a member of the Brunswick Elementary PTO?
That depends on you. You can be a member in name only or you can become an active member. We
invite you to become an active participant in your student’s education by being an active participant
in the PTO. Parents, grandparents, neighbors and siblings, we need your help! Being an active
participant, being involved is not synonymous with being “sucked in.” The level of involvement
is up to you.
Participation through volunteering allows you to be “hands-on” with you child’s education.
Research indicates that when families are involved, a child is more likely to achieve higher grades,
be better behaved, graduate from high school and go on to college. Our children love to see us at
school. It is a place where they spend a large part of each day and they would like to share it with us.
You get to know your children’s teachers and your children’s friends. Please come to meet the men
and women who have also come to love your children.
Participation through attendance at PTO meetings gives you a voice. You could help decide
where to focus our attention and how your donations are spent. Meetings offer a unique opportunity
to meet the principal and staff.
Monies collected during the membership drive help fund programs such as the Mobile
Science Lab. The Mobile Science Lab is a unique enrichment opportunity for all BES students. The
lab offers “investigations to excite students about science and their connection to the world.” This
year the Aquatic Lab will come to visit Brunswick. Your student might build an aqua terra column to
investigate the connection and interaction between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems or clean up a
simulated oil spill and then draw conclusions as the to most effective clean-up material or even
examine the absorbency of several household products and then investigate the water holding
properties of a commercial agricultural product and a pure chemical.
For contributions at or above $10.00 a receipt for your tax records will be sent home with your child.
The children thank you for your support!

Please cut-off the above form and return it to your child’s teacher in an envelope marked
                                                 “PTO Membership”
