ASSIGNMENT THREE – CHARACTER INTERVIEW
To connect your work thus far to our summer reading and current discussion of The Grapes of Wrath, you
will conduct an ethnographic field interview of one of the characters from the novel. You need to imagine
how their chosen characters would respond to each of the interview questions. Some of the answers will
come from the book and others will be hypothetical based on the character's motivation. Remember that
authors generate characters through:
o physical description;
o reactions to other characters; and
o other characters' reactions.
Your assignment is as follows:
1. Select a character from The Grapes of Wrath to use as a focus for an interview.
2. Use the attached Data Collection Survey as a basis for your interview with the character but only a basis.
You should devise your own questions as well.
3. Write a two-hundred and fifty (250) word transcript of the interview, which should include references to
physical objects and other elements of the scene which can be seen as symbols for themes and motifs in
the novel. The format of your transcript should be as follows:
a. A short introduction in paragraph form, detailing the setting, describing the character you are
b. A Question and Answer format where you list your question and the character’s response. For
Interviewer: “How did you decide to leave Oklahoma?”
Tom Joad: “There just wasn’t any work. We needed food. It was time we get on.”
Interviewer: “How did you make it to California?”
