   AUSTRALIANS GIVE RECORD AMOUNT
      FOR SALVOS’ RED SHIELD APPEAL

Despite difficult economic times Australians have again opened their
hearts to support The Salvation Army’s recently concluded 2008 Red
Shield Appeal. The overall appeal, including direct mail, business
donations and the like, which concluded on 30 June, raised a national
total of almost $71 million, a record amount and an increase of a little
more than 2% over the 2007 result. The doorknock component of the
2008 appeal raised nearly $8.8 million, a remarkable increase of just over
10% on last year’s doorknock result.

Major Brad Halse, Communications Director for The Salvation Army, said
today, “Traditionally in difficult economic times Australians tend to give more,
not less, to The Salvation Army. We are very grateful for this immense trust
and support given to us by the Australian community.

‘We wish to thank the Australian public for their outstanding support and
generosity. The monies raised will help ensure that The Salvation Army can
continue with its wide range of services assisting those less fortunate in the
community in the year ahead. These programmes and services cost more
than $500 million annually to provide.”

“With higher interest rates, food costs and petrol prices many Australian are
struggling to make ends meet. Similarly, many farmers are still suffering from
the effects of the long drought, while other communities are recovering from
the devastation caused by the recent floods, and many young people are
fighting addiction and homelessness. These sobering facts remind us that
these funds are desperately needed.”

The Salvation Army also thanks its great team of volunteers for their support.
‘Without them this result would not have been possible, said Major Halse.
