Why Ivey
Developing Leaders – A Tradition Built on Innovation
True leaders are innovators and pioneers, confidently pushing forward through the barriers of conventional thinking and seeing things,
not as they are, but as they could be. Since its inception, Ivey has always been a leader among business schools, and has always stressed
the critical connection between innovation and true leadership to students in our MBA program.
The Richard Ivey School of Business pioneered international business education studies in Canada. It began by offering Canada’s first
honours undergraduate business degree in 1922. Later, in 1948, the School established the country’s first MBA program. It’s all part of a proud
tradition of educating successful leaders that is now more than 60 years strong.
Innovation continues to be a defining Ivey quality. In fact, in 1998, Ivey was the first business school to open a campus in Asia. In 2005, Ivey
revolutionized business education in Canada by re-engineering its curriculum and, most recently, introduced the first one-year MBA program focused
on developing leadership and accelerating career success. As we have since 1922, Ivey continues to be at the forefront of business education.
There are many MBA programs for you to consider but there is only one Ivey Business School. Ivey consistently ranks by BusinessWeek and
the Financial Times among the top business schools in the world. Ivey graduates continue to achieve extraordinary career success with two in
five alumni at Director level or above in their organizations.
When you choose the Richard Ivey School of Business, you choose a history marked by accomplishments… and a future filled with
possibilities. It is a learning experience that is rightly defined as transformational. As you begin your personal quest you can be certain that,
without question, an Ivey MBA offers you the best prospect for accelerated career success.

The Ivey Experience
Forge Lasting Bonds With The Best and Brightest
As a student in the Ivey MBA program, one of the first things that will strike you is the exceptionally high calibre of people in your class.
Our Admissions Committee ensures that every applicant undergoes a rigorous interview and screening process. Each class is a carefully
assembled mix of accomplished and impressive individuals with diverse backgrounds who will teach, motivate and challenge you and enrich
your learning experience. The program is built around teamwork, and you will work with, and learn from, other students who bring extraordinary
experience to the classroom every day at Ivey.
But learning and building relationships also happens beyond the classroom walls. Every student in the program is fully invested in the Ivey
MBA experience by committing to studying in London for the year. Unlike a commuter school, Ivey`s campus experience in London offers the
unique opportunity to form much stronger ties with fellow classmates. Enriching the experience even more is the fact that students come from
around the world, turning Ivey into a global village with a rich diversity of backgrounds. The close friendships that are formed grow into lifelong
personal and professional relationships that are truly international, built around a common experience and commitment to the Ivey Program.
The world-class faculty team is deeply committed to student success, and they use the classroom experience and Ivey case method to
ensure that students do more than simply absorb theories and facts. Experts in their fields, Ivey faculty write approximately 150 new cases
each year reflecting the current realities of business. However, the defining characteristic of Ivey faculty is an uncanny ability to define the
personality of a class and the capabilities of the individuals within the class. Ivey faculty act like conductors in the classroom, drawing out the
collective talents of each student to contribute to and elevate the depth of case discussions, knowing that our students learn so much more

from one another than from the professor at the front of the class. Then they use that
insight to tailor a classroom experience that focuses on tackling business issues and
making decisions.
The involvement of Ivey alumni is also a crucial part of the Ivey experience.
Deeply committed to the success of the school, members of the Ivey alumni, many
of whom are C-level executives, act as case leads, guest speakers and they participate
in the Ivey Partnership Program, which pairs MBA students with alumni mentors. Ivey
alumni also engage with current students when they come back to the school recruiting
for their organizations, returning to Ivey to access strong talent. The opportunity to
connect with and learn from business leaders with whom you share a bond with Ivey can
prove to be instrumental not just in the classroom, but also to future career success.

How Learning Comes Alive
Real-World Learning
At Ivey, learning isn’t a spectator sport. It’s a hands-on, learn-by-doing, action-oriented style of decision-making that immerses you in
complex, real-world business scenarios. And with the input of top recruiters, business leaders, and alumni we are constantly innovating the
Program to ensure our students are prepared to meet the needs and challenges of today’s business world.
The key is our unique learning approach featuring the Ivey case method. It immerses you in real-world problems where you quickly learn
how to analyze available data, develop options, make a decision, and plan a course of action. Ivey cases cover issues that cross every functional
area and industry, putting you in the shoes of a decision maker faced with issues from a product introduction in North America to building
a new plant in Asia to human resources issues in South America. The classroom experience is interactive, challenging and engaging and all
students are active contributors in driving their own learning experience.
Through hundreds of case studies and simulations, you’re exposed to several years of real-life business knowledge in just one
transformational year. The Ivey classroom provides an opportunity to build your skills as a decision maker in an environment where mistakes
don’t cost you anything, and the process of making hundreds of decisions throughout the year results in a new framework you will use to solve
business problems throughout your career. In our exclusive Ivey Cross-Enterprise Leadership™ approach and our hands-on, action-oriented
method, learning is accelerated and knowledge is absorbed faster. At Ivey, we focus on teaching not just what to think, but HOW to think, act,
and execute. You emerge from the Program with greater confidence and enhanced leadership abilities.

A Classroom you have to Experience
Sit in on just one Ivey MBA class and your perception of what constitutes a relevant, engaging learning environment will never
be the same.
From day one the pace is fast and unyielding and the adrenalin rush is undeniable. Each class is a journey through a complex, multi-
disciplined business challenge. You are immediately confronted with the reality that, in business, things rarely fit into tidy functional boxes.
You feel the intense pressure of making decisions under tight deadlines. In the real world you may have too much information, or at times not
enough, and at Ivey you’ll become comfortable making decisions when faced with uncertainty.
Classroom discussion starts with each student tackling an individual assessment of the case - analyzing a real, complex business problem
and crafting a plan of action. From there, you test your ideas and plans at a learning team meeting with a group of bright, driven, and
opinionated peers. New ideas and strategies will emerge and you’ll gain even greater confidence in your decision. The Ivey classroom is the
final step in examining complex business issues with depth and fresh insight, opening up the debate to a myriad of opinions and surprising
conclusions. The emphasis throughout classroom discussions is grounded in decision-making, focusing on not just issue analysis, but also on
what you will do to address the issue - building skills in action and execution. Debate may even continue after class spilling out into halls and
break-out rooms - making learning memorable and impactful.
You learn that debate and criticism is inevitable, useful and nothing to fear. The frank and uncensored views of your classmates will open
your eyes to ideas and insights that you might otherwise never have discovered. It’s in an environment that is engaging, motivating, and a truly
dynamic way to learn.

Business Knowledge
Teaching The Fundamentals
As Canada’s only case-based business school, Ivey delivers a solid foundation of practical business fundamentals. Ivey faculty are experts in
their respective fields, so you’re learning the fundamentals from people who have experience and have remained current in those areas.
You are exposed to core business functions throughout the curriculum.
And through Ivey’s unique action-oriented, hands-on approach, you are learning the specifics of functional disciplines, like Finance or
Accounting, but you are also experiencing how each of these functions impact one another. Each is a part of a greater whole and must
work within the context of the entire enterprise for any solution to work. This broad perspective helps bring out the Cross-Enterprise
Leadership abilities the business community demands.
Beyond The Fundamentals
The Ivey MBA Program offers other unique opportunities to enhance your professional development that set it apart from traditional
business schools:
• Participate in Canada’s longest running client field project, building real-world experience while consulting for major corporations
on current business issues in the Ivey Business Consulting Project.
• Build real entrepreneurial skills by developing a business idea from inception to “making the pitch” to investors and entrepreneurs
in the New Venture Projects.

What You Learn
state-of-the-Art Curriculum
Curriculum design begins with input from faculty, recruiters, students and alumni. The result is
a one-year program focused on the career success of our students, not just a collection of courses
selected by faculty preference. It’s all delivered in a dynamic, high-energy learning environment that
emphasizes the application of skills in complex real-world business situations.
Our Curriculum
Preparatory Knowledge Program
The Preparatory Knowledge Program takes place before official programming begins, and is a four-week modular program
covering: (1) Basics of Business, (2) Economics Primer, (3) Accounting and Finance Primer, and (4) Quantitative Analysis
Primer. The main objective of this programming is to ensure that you get off to a good start in the MBA program so that
when classes begin, class time is used to maximum benefit. It’s also a great way to get a refresher of the business basics, to
reacquaint yourself with the school routine, and get to know some of your classmates.
Business Essentials (Modules 1 & 2)
Preparing students for career success starts with ensuring that you have a solid foundation of business essentials, and
are confident in your understanding of these core subjects. Building knowledge in these fundamental areas happens
during the first six months of the Program, where you will complete two modules that consist of core courses including:
Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Operations, Leading People & Organizations, Decision Making with Analytics,
Communications, Designing and Executing Strategy and Leveraging Information Technology.
Elective Period 1 & 2
Midway through the Program, you will select a minimum of eight electives from a wide variety of offerings. You can choose
to take recommended elective course sets that allow you to focus in one of six different areas: Corporate Strategy and
Leadership, Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, International Management, or Health Sector or you can build your own
elective structure choosing from all of these course sets.
Additional Program Experiences
• Get Connected event in Toronto
• Student-run recruiting trips to various destinations
• First round interview week
• December break
• Major Real-World Projects: Ivey Consulting or Ivey New Venture
Elective Period with International Trip
The purpose of the International Study Trip is to help students develop an appreciation for a different culture and business
environment. The trip complements the classroom activities of the Ivey MBA program with on-the-ground exposure to one of
the world’s most dynamic and exciting economic regions. Students will have the opportunity to learn about and experience a
new culture directly and gain first-hand knowledge of what it takes to operate successfully in one of the world’s most rapidly
changing business environments.
Elective Period 4 & 5
Elective programming continues, allowing you to focus in one of six different areas: Corporate Strategy and Leadership,
Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, International Management, or Health Sector or you can build your own elective
structure choosing from all of these course sets.
Leading Cross-Enterprise
The Program concludes with a one-month module that pulls together what you have learned over the duration of the program,
and challenges you to tackle real-world problems facing organizations in a wide variety of global settings, industries and
entrepreneurial ventures. This module will hone your cross-enterprise leadership skills through a series of challenging cases,
interactive assignments, and high-profile guest speakers.
International Trip options
At the end of the program, you will have the opportunity to participate in one of Ivey’s International Trip Options. You may
volunteer to participate in either the LEADER Project in Eastern Europe and Russia, the China Teaching Project, or the India
Teaching and Entrepreneurship Project. You can find out more about these international opportunities on our website.

All schools develop business knowledge to

the career path they choose after graduation.
But that’s where the similarity stops. At Ivey,

never sufficient for career success. To achieve
success in your career, you will need to develop

Lead in the Real World
Ivey Leadership Essentials
Embrace Complexity: Students learn that leadership in the real world is full of complexity and that problems don’t arrive in tidy boxes
labeled ‘marketing’ or ‘finance’. Cases are written with real information – sometimes too much, sometimes too little -- so students learn how
to uncover the critical details needed to make a sound decision.
Decisiveness Through Uncertainty: There is a bias for action in all case discussions with ‘What would you do?” being the core
question every manager and decision maker must ask. Ivey students learn that uncertainty always exists and leaders are required to
step up to the challenge.
Communicate Persuasively: Contribution is a required component in all courses, and students learn how to not only present, but defend
their ideas and decisions confidently and persuasively as they are challenged by their peers and by faculty. Communicating concisely in a way
that is convincing yet diplomatic is a core Ivey skill you will use to build buy-in and communicate vision.
Maximize Team Potential: Leadership is about identifying core strengths, allocating tasks accordingly, and keeping others motivated in
order to maximize team potential. The ability to teach and inspire others is a critical skill and a strong focus at Ivey with case preparation,
reports, and simulations stuctured around teamwork.
Manage Volume: Business demands MBA graduates have the innate ability to manage multiple challenges, deal with conflicting demands,
and perform under intense workloads. In our one-year Program, Ivey students are faced with competing deadlines, and focus on multiple
priorities making trade-off decisions to manage volume every day.
