Matters Arising
Peter Goward, Faculty Lead for User and Carer Involvement Sheffield Hallam
University; involving service users and carers in the development of the future
workforce strategy: Nick Arkle
All agreed for Nick Arkle to organise with Peter Goward three dates to allow NA/PG
service users and carers the opportunity to give feedback on their views as to ‘what
they think the workforce should look like’. There will be one meeting in each of the
three areas; Doncaster, Rotherham and Scunthorpe. Nick to email all groups with
dates and venues.
Drama project with carers and Sheffield Hallam University: Nick Arkle
Drama project details circulated, anyone interested please go along, they are
meeting every Wednesday in February apart from the half term week and on the 25
March 2010 they are doing the play in Sheffield. (It may be possible for a show to
be held at the Library Theatre, Rotherham; The Ivanhoe Centre in Conisborough
was suggested as another possible venue)
Physical Health Checklist (PHC): Caroline Greenough
Caroline Greenough presented a paper on the PHC: a physical health checklist for
mental health service users developed by RETHINK. It has been agreed to pilot the
assessment tool for 6 months next year. Caroline is liaising with IT to have the
assessment tool on maracis with training to accompany it. Any feedback regarding
the physical health checklist should be sent to Amanda Scott or alternatively email
to amanda.scott@rdash.nhs.uk.
Caroline will work with the User Carer Research sub-group as part of the evaluation
of the PHC.
Caroline’s presentation led to much discussion around the subject of physical health
check for people who experience severe mental illness. The need for a consistent
approach across Primary Care and the Trust was highlighted.
The pilot will look at communication between GPs and the Trust and the need for
care co-ordinators and GPs to work together.
The Council is supportive of the pilot to go ahead and looks forward to feedback CG
from Caroline in the future.

Glyn commented that for new referrals to MIND this would be a brilliant tool to
assess physical well-being.
Caroline confirmed that this document could be downloaded for service users to
use.
Caroline asked the group to consider a physical health and well-being information
leaflet she is developing to gain feedback, the following comments were made:
There is a risk with the information provided on the left hand side of this
booklet is too scary and that there is too much information on the right.
It was also suggested a brain should be part of the picture.
The red and green combination is good.
It was felt that it was seriously depressing.
It was suggested that healthy eating and nutritional advice might be added.
Any further comments, please contact Amanda on telephone number 01302 796305 ALL
or email Amanda.scott@rdash.nhs.uk to forward to Caroline Greenough.
Member Group Feedback (what groups are doing): Group representatives
MIND, Rotherham –
Glyn Butcher on behalf of Mind informed the group of the following: -
1. Appointment of Steve Kirk, Chief Executive Officer and Liz Flanagan,
Adult Services Manager.
2. Rotherham Mind drop-in centre currently gets £190,000 to run the drop-in
centre which is paid in quarter instalments but could be cut by 50% next
April.
3. The Direct Payment for Rotherham Mind services will be £16.70 an hour.
4. 64 different people used the Rotherham Mind drop-in centre at least once
last week, and out of the 64 people roughly 40 people would not qualify for
direct payments.
5. This will result in a reduction in service for people who do not qualify for
direct payments.
6. As a result of the cut in funding the time Rotherham Mind drop-in centre
hours will have to be reduced.
7. Carers are a priority. There are 10 regular carers that attend the carers group
on Wednesday between 1:00 till 3:00pm and the carers also use the drop-in
through the week. Rotherham Mind does not know as yet if carers have to
pay £16.70 to attend the carers group.
8. Rotherham Mind has some clients using there direct payments to access
Rotherham Minds services. This money will go toward the shortfall in next
years funding.

Update - Infopoint Help Points: Samantha Murray
Sam informed the group that there was still no progress with regards to securing the
taxi sponsorship for Doncaster and Scunthorpe and that Ben Clarke from Infopoint
had agreed that he would contact her again on 15 December 2009 to give an update.
In the meantime she had requested information on the usage of the Infopoint and
reported the following:
Martini Taxis had been used 81 times in the months June, July and August.
Mind – 3 times.
Speaking Up – 1 time
Sheila Barnes said she may be able to make some enquiries with regards to
obtaining a taxi sponsorship for Doncaster and Scunthorpe.
Service Developments: Ian Jerams
Ian informed the group that he had made the Assistant Directors aware of the issues
raised by Speaking Up around appointment times not being kept to and that he IJ
would monitor this. It was also mentioned that in some Mental Health Trusts, ward
rounds are no longer run and this might be something RDaSH will consider. Please
contact or email any issues/comments to amanda.scott@rdash.nhs.uk to be
forwarded to Ian Jerams.
It was suggested that we invite Mark Caulfield from Speaking Up or a NA/AS
representative from Cloverleaf to report to the council on a twice yearly basis.
Meetings 2010: Glyn Butcher and Nick Arkle
The Council discussed whether the meetings should be held in different parts of the
Trust rather than a central meeting in Doncaster. Service users and carers from
North Lincolnshire have not attended the past few meetings.
The difficulties of travelling to meetings across the Trust was discussed, however it
was felt that the meetings should be held at Doncaster.
The possibility of having local Council meetings was discussed, and this may offer a
way for North Lincolnshire to feed views to the UCPC.
Annual Conference Feedback: Nick Arkle
The Annual Conference, Kingsway Centre, Scunthorpe on Friday 9 October 2009
was a success with 55 people attending. Most of the comments received were
positive, however the air conditioning and parking was an issue for some people.
It was felt that there was insufficient time to make comments on the New Horizons
Consultation, due to it being such a large document. It was also felt that the
document was aimed at professionals and not service users/carers.
Nick to feedback on questions raised at the conference. NA
Sub-group reports and updates
Employment Sub-group Update:
Nick informed the group on behalf of Gillian Whall that the group had delivered the
initial action plan. The group is to be reviewed as to whether it should continue in
its current form. There is a need to ensure that the action plan is applied in practice
and this should be evaluated.
Care Programme Approach (CPA): Steve Crann
Steve Crann asked the Council to consider a checklist he is developing. This is
titled ‘My Care’ which may support service users and carers and help them consider
questions they may ask of staff.
The Council offered the following feedback: -
It’s really good because it puts you in the driving seat and in charge of your
own recovery.
It’s asking professionals what they will be doing and explaining the
treatment they will be giving which is very important to me.
The questionnaire is asking you to participate in your own recovery and to
work in partnership with professionals.
The questionnaire helps you to take responsibility for your own recovery.
Very good, good detail, covering all the relevant questions, it’s good as a
reminder.
Very helpful, a good starting template.
The checklist; is it for service users or care co-ordinators
Very wordy
Needs to be simplified and structured into sections
Not happy with the term ‘treatment’
Communications: Rob Webster
Unfortunately, Rob Webster was unable to attend the meeting to show the UCPC
the newsletter which would report on service users and sub-groups issues.
Service User and Carer Research: Helen Oldknow
Data collection for ‘Care of inpatients who are identified as posing a significant risk
to themselves or others policy' will be completed this week and then, work on
analysis and report writing will commence.
Managing Work Related Violence (MWRV) August:
Dr Roby and Dr Bottomley’s junior doctor is now involved in this work and is
liaising with the group, regarding data collection.
St/nurse evaluation:
RDaSH Education link facilitator returned to clinical practice, new facilitator
joining Trust. Helen will meet with to progress this work
Physical Health Pilot
Physical Health and Well-being lead has asked the group to be involved in a pilot
evaluation. She will attend the group meeting later in the year to discuss the
evaluation details.
Essence of care.
Deb Wildgoose discussed this with the group at the last meeting and the group is
happy to help if required.
Trust Update:
The national picture on Swine Flu is that the Second surge is not as bad as
anticipated, however; there is a possibility that it could become more serious, and
may have a re-surge in Spring. The Trust will continue to be vigilant. All staff are
being encouraged to attend for the Swine Flu vaccination.
The ground breaking ceremony for the new Older Peoples Mental Health Inpatient
Unit on the Rotherham General Hospital site has just taken place as part of the
development of inpatient services in Rotherham.
The new service model for Trust services is still on track, being led by Gail Hebdon.
There are plans to develop information leaflets and opportunities for service users
and carers to meet with managers to publicise the changes and to consult. The
timetable for the changes remains;
Doncaster-April 2010
Rotherham-October 2010
North Lincolnshire-April 2011
No changes will occur for service users without them being included in the
discussion and decision making process.
There are plans to modernise the Carer Unit in North Lincolnshire to provide a
modern inpatient setting for older people.
The Trust is in the process of changing the management of services through the
development of Business Units. Each unit will focus on delivering high quality
services to service users and carers. This is a model of delivering health services
which has being very successful in other parts of the country and will support the
core business of the Trust in improving service delivery and quality, operating
efficiently at a time when there is a challenging financial climate.
Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP): Nick Arkle
Nick is writing a briefing to show what is happening across the Trust for WRAP and NA
will present it at the next meeting.
1,000 of the Little Book of WRAP have been ordered and should arrive before
Christmas.
Any Other Business
Glyn asked whether there are any Hearing Voices groups in the Trust. Nick GB
informed him that there is one starting in Doncaster, which will be led by staff, for
people who are known to the West CMHT, based at Stapleton Road. Glyn said that
the Sheffield group was very active. It was suggested he contact Sheffield hearing
voices to see if they could give us advice on setting one up in Rotherham.
(The contact for the Sheffield group is: Peter Bullimore: Tel 0114 271 8210,
Email: peterbullimore@yahoo.co.uk.)
Nick informed the group that South CMHT were trying to put together a service
information leaflet. Nick asked whether the sub-groups could take the leaflet and
questionnaire that goes with it to their groups as he needs 10 responses as part of the
Get It Write process.
