earth.
Temperature

Temperature is a
degree of hotness
or coldness the
can be measured
using a
thermometer.
There is a relation between

altitude and temperature.
Hypothesis
My plan for this experiment

is to find out and study how
altitude affects temperature.
Aims
The sun heats the earth and as the
ground absorbs the heat from the sun
the air above the ground conducts the
warmth and that is how the air gets it
heat. The air temperature depends on
how warm the earth is: if the ground
temperature is warm the air
Introduction

temperature will therefore increase.

Regarding this information, the higher
up the air is, the cooler the air
becomes because it means that the air
is further away from the heat source.
So there should be a difference in the
air temperature, between how high up
and how low down the air is, but how
big will this difference be.
I will be
conducting my
experiment in
Switzerland as
Switzerland is
home to many
great mountains
such as the
Location

Matterhorn. This
will enable me to
get high above sea
level so this will
be the ideal place
to do my
experiment.
• The data I will need is the
temperatures from
multiple stops down the
descent. I will ski from
Gornergrat at 3090m were
I will measure and record
I shall ski the temperature at regular
from here. intervals of 100m. I will
also take my position on a
GPS. I will then take my
Method

results and construct a
graph with them and then
And finish I will be able to see if
here. altitude affects
temperature.
• From my previous experience I have discovered that the
higher up an incline I travel the colder it gets. This is clearly
evident because snow only settles at the top of mountains
and that shows it is below the freezing point of water at the
top of a mountains but not at the bottom.
Prediction
• Thermometer – To measure temperature.
• GPS – To take my position.
Equipment

• Altimeter – To measure altitude.
• Video Camera – To record method of taking
results.

To conclude I think this experiment was a success as I
achieved positive results which proved my prediction to
be correct. This experiment has proved that altitude
does affect temperature quite severely. Overall I think
the experiment has been a great success.
Conclusion

Gornergrat
If I was to do this experiment again I would probably change aspects of it
to get more accurate results. Instead of skiing down the mountainside and
taking readings as I go I would place thermometers all the way down one
side of the mountain and take the readings all at once. This will ensure that
I am only getting readings from one side of the mountain instead of
changing sides between readings. Furthermore when I did the experiment
the sun was dipping in and out of clouds and the temperature was
therefore dropping between readings and so taking all the readings at once
Evaluation

would make a fair test. Otherwise I think I made this test as fair as it
possibly could be.
