DBQ GUIDELINES INTRODUCTION Step 1 – Topic Sentence… (Introduce what your topic is). You can find this information in the HISTORICAL CONTEXT section of the DBQ. Step 2- Give a definition of your topic. Step 3- Write about the different issues that relate to your topic. (This is usually what the actual Documents are about)…..keep it simple! Step 4- Write your THESIS statement. This sentence tells what your essay will prove. (Look for this information in the TASK) BODY PARAGRAPH Step 1- Topic Sentence Write a sentence introducing what this paragraph will be about. This sentence should relate to your Thesis statement. Step 2- Write 3 or 4 sentences about what you know on the topic. This is where you write your outside information. Step 3- Write a sentence that explains what the Document you are using is about. (Example….. Document 2 shows how important it was for people to have basic rights) Step 4- “Quote the Document.” Make sure the quote relates to what you wrote in step 3. Step 5- explain in a few sentences what is important about this document as shown in your quote. Step 6- Write one sentence that summarizes what this paragraph was about. You may need to repeat steps 3 and 4 for additional documents. ************* You will need to write more than 1 body paragraph!!!! CONCLUSION Step 1- Write your THESIS again. Step 2- Write 1 sentence to summarize the 1st body paragraph. Step 3- Write 1 sentence summarizing the second body paragraph. Step 4- Write one sentence that will summarize the whole DBQ essay.
