    Deoxy-ribo-nucleic acid
Discovery

  1871- Friedrich Miescher discovers that
   all nuclei contain only 2 significant
   substances-protein and nuclein (nucleic
   acid).
  DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA
   (ribonucleic acid) were subsequently
   identified as the two nucleic acids.
 1944-O.T. Avery, C. M. MacLeod and M.
  McCarty showed only DNA could
  transfer avirulent into virulent bacteria.
 1953- Double helix model of DNA
  structure created.

Makeup

    DNA -could be further broken down into
     smaller units called nucleotides. These
     contain five carbon sugars, phosphate
     groups, and organic bases containing
     nitrogen.
 These four bases are adenine (A),
  guanine (G), which are the purines and
  thymine (T) and cytosine (C), which are
  pyrimidines. In RNA thymine is replaced
  by uracil (U).
 Double helix may be 108 pairs long.
Replication

  DNA contains the code that determines
   genetic makeup of an animal.
  During interphase, DNA unwinds at H
   bonds and replicates in a
   semiconservative manner.
 DNA codes the makeup of all cells
  through RNA.
 DNA message is:
 1. trancribed into mRNA
 2. translated into proteins ( with tRNA
  and rRNA)
RNA

  Is important for the creation,
   manufacture of specefic proteins " one
   gene, one enzyme" theory.
  3 types of RNA, all relatively small
   compared to DNA.
   1. messenger RNA (mRNA)
   2. ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
   3. transfer RNA (tRNA)
   Also differnt in that
   1. RNA is not double helix strand as is DNA
   2. Thymine is replaced by uracil.
   3. Deoxyribose sugar replaced by ribose
   4. RNA found throughout cell.
