Finland’s special characteristics
•    In summertime rain showers can cause
     floods, mostly in cities

•    Majority of floods caused by melting snow
     and ice jams

•    Topography

•    Regulation of water level and flow
     possible in some catchment areas

•    Three “international” rivers:
       •      Vuoksi, runs from lake Saimaa to lake Ladoga,
              Russia
       •      Tornio joki, on border with Sweden
       •      Teno, on border with Norway

Watershed simulation and forecasting system
(WSFS)
•      Main component is a hydrological model representing the circulation of
       water in a catchment.

•Includes models for:
     •areal rain
     •soil moisture
     •subsurface water storage
     •ground water storage

•Covers all Finland (c. 6200
catchment areas)

•Simulates 2400 lakes

    Automated hydrological
    warnings
•   Based on observations and model forecasts
•   Published in SYKE’s website
•   Send by e-mail and/or text-messages to:
      • areal environment centers, safety authorities, power
         plants, water level regulation authorities, etc.
      • In case of border crossing river areas also to Sweden,
         Norway and Russia.

•   Colour-coding based on recurrence rate and potential for
    damages
                 Advisory on high water-level or strong flow. Recurrence
                    3…10 years. Can cause local problems.

                 Warning for high water-level or strong flow. Recurrence
                   10…50 years. Causes problems in places.

                 Warning for exceptionally water-level or strong flow or flood.
                   Recurrence era more than 50 years. Can cause serious
                   problems.

                 Notification about exceeding regulation limit

                 Notification on exceeding threshold for flood or flow mass.
