Is a Cochlear Implant Right for You?

Cochlear Implants have gained increased
popularity in recent years, especially with
celebrities such as Rush Limbaugh and
Heather Whiteston McCallum endorsing their
use. These devices require a surgical
procedure during which time an internal
processor and electrode array are placed into
the cochlea (organ of hearing). An external
device that looks much like a behind the ear
hearing aid captures incoming sounds that
are filtered, processed, and converted to digital information which is
transmitted to the internal component.

The internal component then converts the digital information into
electrical energy. This electrical energy is sent through an electrode
array in the cochlea, bypassing the damaged hair cells that result in
hearing loss. The electrode provides stimulation to the hearing
nerve, allowing the brain to perceive sound.

To determine if this treatment option is right for you, answer the
following questions:

• Do you wear powerful hearing aids but continue to have difficulty
understanding conversational speech, even in quiet?

• Do you rely on closed captioning to understand television
programs?

• Do you watch a speaker’s face closely for visual cues during
conversations?

• Are you often tired due to the amount of concentration
communication requires?

• Do you have difficulty communicating at work, especially on the
phone?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be a
candidate for cochlear implantation. To determine candidacy, contact
an Audiologist, a professional specializing in the diagnosis and
treatment of hearing loss. The audiologist will conduct a thorough
case history and complete a thorough hearing evaluation, including
several speech tests to determine your candidacy.
