We don’t expect or plan to be involved in
accidents, but when they happen they’re often
stressful events that can leave us badly shaken.
Being prepared with the information you’ll have to give to others, plus a reminder of useful
details you’ll need from them, can help make the experience a little less distressing.

This handy booklet contains advice and is somewhere to keep useful contact numbers
and information about the accident, your vehicle and your insurers.

The Road Traffic Act 1988 s.170 requires you to stop following a road traffic accident and give
your driver and owner details (name, address) and vehicle registration number to the other
driver, owner, any passenger, police or any other relevant person, if they require it. If there is
an injury to others, then you are also required to provide sight of the insurance certificate and
insurance details and if not available at the scene of accident, then at the police station within
24 hours of the accident.

Step	1
Immediately after an accident try to stay calm and not panic; ensure no one is injured and do
not admit liability without legal advice.

Then, follow our guide and complete the information required.

Step	3:	Taking	photographs
If you can, take photographs of the incident immediately after it happens, showing the
position of vehicles and objects involved:

● take photographs of the accident scene – ideally pictures should represent the views you
and the other party had when approaching the accident scene, as well as wider overall
views of the road lay-out and any speed restrictions
● where the issue of road markings or signs may be relevant, try to ensure markings and/or
     signs are clearly visible
● if there’s debris or skid marks left on the road, take a photograph showing their position in
the road – not close-ups of the debris itself, but shots showing where the debris fell, and
therefore where the collision took place
● take photographs of the damage caused to the vehicles involved – close-ups showing the
detail of the damage and some wider angle shots showing the overall effect of the impact
● if the defect, hazard or spillage is outside a place or work, school or house, contact
people there to see how long it has been there, and whether they’ve reported it to anyone
● take photographs of the defect, hazard or spillage, preferably including a ruler or some
     other standard-size item

Sketch plan
Make a sketch of the accident scene showing:

● road layout
● road names
● road lane markings
● road signs (including speed)
● position of the vehicle on impact
● direction of travel for each party

              We’ll keep you
              on the road
The slightest lapse of concentration on today’s busy roads
can leave you facing a fine, penalty points - even a ban.

We don’t condone breaking traffic laws, but do believe
those who break them should have access to the best
              possible legal advice.
