REGULAR MEETING
MONDAY, February 27, 2012
5:30 P.M.
The Ashland Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. in
the board conference room located at 1820 Hickman Street. Chairperson Carol Jackson called the
meeting to order. The invocation and pledge to the flag were given by Charlie Chatfield.

Order # 23 Upon the recommendation of the superintendent, it was moved by Patricia
Minutes Hall and seconded by Molly Webb to approve the minutes of the regular
meeting of January 30, 2012 and the special meeting of February 17, 2012.

The Board recognized Caitlin Brown, a junior at Blazer High School. She was selected for the 2012
American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall, New York City, February 2012.
She was part of the Honors Choir as a Soprano 1.
Rick Chaffin, Social Studies teacher at Verity Middle School, presented the Board members with copies
of a book his writing class compiled. They had a book signing at the Ashland Town Center Mall on
February 20th featuring their book Imagination Released – short stories written by 16 student writers.
Hager and Poage Elementary Schools and Blazer High School presented their Comprehensive School
Improvement Plans for 2012.
Richard Oppenheimer, Director of Student Achievement, reviewed changes to school accountability
due to NCLB waiver. The state applied for and was granted a waiver from the mandates of No Child
Left Behind, but there are other measurable objectives that schools must meet.
Steve Gilmore, Superintendent, reported on the following:
receipt of $50,000 from the Foundation for the Tri-State Community for Phase 1 of the
Putnam Stadium restoration project
competitive bidding resolution draft
elementary governor’s cup winners
Chuck Trimble, Murphy/Graves Architects, reported on the following:
Central Office roof
Alumni Gym renovation
Poage Elementary renovation
Verity Middle renovation
Order # 24 Upon the recommendation of the superintendent, Charlie Chatfield moved and
2012-2013 Molly Webb seconded to approve the tentative staffing levels for 2012-2013 in
Tentative Staffing accordance with Section 4, Section 5 and Section 6 of KRS 157.360.

Homeless Hall and seconded by Molly Webb to approve submission of the Homeless
Education Education Program grant for 2012-2013.
