Van De Graaf Lab
Ninth Grade Earth Science
Time: 50 minutes
Objective: During the lab activity, students will write how different materials react
to static electricity.

- Animal fur
- Paper holes
- Pie plates
- Light bulbs
- Human hair
- Human chain
- Open hand
- finger tip or knuckle
Anticipatory Set: After taking attendance go through a quick review of conductors
and insulators. Review gaining and loosing electrons from a balloon. (5 min.)
1. Explain the Van De Graaf generator to the class.
2. As a class we will complete #1-6 on the lab handout.
3. I will draw numbers for students to come to the front of the class and demo an
object. We will demo all objects on the lab handout. After we demo an object, we
will explain what happens and why it happens as a class.
