Information-- News for Veterans - DD 214s Now Available Online

LET US do our part to help save the ARMY some money!
Before anyone opts to use the NARA website, please note the information
provided by Ms. Tatum, Chief, Veterans Support Branch, HRC-STL. The NARA
web site has been out for approximately 2-years. The title "DD 214s Now
Available Online" is an eye catcher simply because of the importance of the
DD Form 214. The implication is that you can receive a DD Form 214 from an
online data base, which is NOT true. You must apply through the web site
and if NARA has a record you will possibly receive the DD Form 214. However,
if the DD Form 214 is NOT available in the Soldier's record or if the service
is subsequent to OCTOBER 2002, the Soldier will receive a referral to the
Army. NARA is not informing everyone that they do not have records subsequent
to October 2002. The Army maintains their own records electronically for
service subsequent to October 2002 and will not send those records to NARA
for 60+ years. As a result, NARA's web site opens an opportunity for NARA
to forward those requests to the Army, HRC-STL, Veterans Support Branch,
because they do not have the records. NARA charges the Army $34.00 for each
inquiry. The article should inform customers that if their service is
subsequent to October 2002, they should NOT use NARA's web site, but write
directly to the Army at Commander, HRC-St Louis, ATTN: CC-B, 1 Reserve Way,
St. Louis, MO 3132-5200.

Widest dissemination of this information is appreciated!

Thanks to Ms. Tatum and Mr. Schwab for the information!

> Dear Consortium Members and Fellow "Hiring Heroes" Recruiters,
> Great news for veterans - The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC)
> has provided the following website for veterans to gain access to their
> online: This will cut the waiting time
> veterans have had in the past waiting for copies of their DD 214s and
> will be particularly helpful when they need a copy of their DD-214 for
> employment purposes.
> NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and
> Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military
> files. Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former
> military members may now use a new online military personnel records
> system to request documents. Other individuals with a need for
> documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be
> downloaded from the online web site. Because the requester will be
> asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the
> request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for
> additional information will be minimized. The new web-based
> application was designed to provide better service on these requests
> by eliminating the records center's mailroom processing time. Please
> pass this information on to former military personnel you may know and
> their dependents.
