First batch of Bevis papers received at UMASS Amherst

Twenty-eight containers of papers from the family of the late grassroots water fluoridation activist Martha Bevis of Texas were received at the University of Massachusetts Amherst WEB DuBois Library last month. The delivery marks the beginning of a special collection on grassroots opposition to fluoridation. The UMASS Library specializes in the collections of grassroots opposition movements, said Department Head Dr. Robert Cox. The Non-Fluoridated Consumer editor Michael Dolan, who organized the Bevis donation and proposed the idea for the UMASS collection, invites people who wish to donate materials to this collection to contact him at nfc@ecsnews.com.

Donora anniversary story downplays fluoride’s role in killing 20
Last November marked the 60th anniversary of the Donora, Pennsylvania air pollution incident that killed 20 people and lead to the modern environmental movement, but a story on the disaster downplayed the lead role of fluoride chemicals in causing the deaths. The New York Times Service story, that was published in both the Boston Globe and the Springfield Republican, contained one reference to fluorine deep in the story, but failed to mention that both investigators and the company that caused the pollution concluded at the time that the deaths were due to fluoride poisoning. That was one of the main revelations in Christopher Bryson’s award winning book, The Fluoride Deception, published in 2004.
Dental researchers question use of fluoride supplements
Citing their lack of effectiveness and clear evidence that they cause dental fluorosis, dental researchers at the University of Michigan have recommended that the use of fluoride supplements be re-examined. Writing in the Journal of the American Dental Association A.I. Ismail and Hana Hasson conclude, “There is weak and inconsistent evidence that the use of fluoride supplements prevents dental caries in primary teeth. There is evidence that such supplements prevent caries in permanent teeth. Mild-to-moderate dental fluorosis is a significant side effect. “The current recommendation for use of fluoride supplements during the first six years of life should be re-examined,” the write.
Wall Street Journal writer responds to comments on fluoridation story as if she were a CDC spokesperson
On Election Day Wall Street Journal health columnist Melinda Beck commented on the state of the struggle over fluoridation and the large number of towns with referenda on the question. My comment to her and her response are printed below:
2 Dear Ms. Beck, Your article in today's journal neglected to mention that as a result of the 2006 NRC study, both the American Dental Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the two leading proponents of fluoridation, have conceded that parents should not give their infants formula reconstituted with fluoridated tap water, as it causes dental fluorosis. By admitting this, they are essentially acknowledging that water fluoridation is in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act. For this and other reasons the unions of scientists at EPA have called for an end to water fluoridation in the USA, also not mentioned in your story. Attached is a flyer that lists the unions. I believe that you are overstating the CDC's position on infant formula. The closest the agency comes to "conceding" this is "Parents and caregivers of infants fed primarily with formula from concentrate who are concerned about the effect that mixing their infant's formula with fluoridated water may have in developing enamel fluorosis can lessen this exposure by mixing formula with low fluoride water most or all of the time." The CDC also says: "CDC will continue to assess the science regarding the use of fluoride in preventing tooth decay while limiting enamel fluorosis, and will modify its recommendations as warranted. CDC believes that community water fluoridation is safe and healthy and promotes its use for people of all ages."
