Head Teacher: Mrs. Avril Wilson
19th August 2010
A warm welcome back to everyone and I hope you’ve all had a lovely holiday.
Please find the following enclosed with this letter:-
1. Two EE2 forms – one of which should be completed and returned directly to school. The other
should also be completed and kept at home for future reference. EE2’s for P4B, P5A and P6B
must be returned by Friday 20th August, along with the excursion consent form for the
forthcoming Book Festival.
2. Calendar of dates for the year ahead with all of the information we have to hand at the moment.
There will be additions to this as the year progresses but hopefully it is an excellent starting point
for you. Please keep it in a safe place.
3. A summary of our Standards and Quality Report celebrating the range of work and experiences
undertaken within Balgreen last session.
4. Trips: The trip payment form must be returned directly to school indicating your preferred
method of payment. We must have this on record for every child before they can participate in
any school excursions. Please note it is your responsibility to keep up to date with the method of
payment chosen. A few families have chosen to still pay on a trip by trip basis. This may mean
a lot of money being asked for at any one time and I am therefore keen to continue with the
benefits of the proposed payment plan. All trips compliment the work we do in school and are an
extended part of the curriculum. Every child is expected to participate and costs are worked out
on this assumption. We need to book places and transport well in advance and contributions are
required from every child to balance the costs incurred.
5. P4-7 trip letter for the Edinburgh Book Festival: The return slip and EE2 form must be back in
school to allow the children to attend the Festival which starts week beginning 23 rd August.
School Uniform: I would like to thank you for your support in ensuring the children come to
school wearing appropriate school uniform. It is a key element in helping to build a sense of
community and, as I have already indicated, is a proven link to positive attitude and behaviour.
We need your continued support and I would like to remind you that uniform should consist of a
school sweatshirt or similar dark coloured top, polo shirt, school skirt or trousers and plain dark
footwear. Children should not come to school wearing any form of sport clothing i.e. stripped
track suite bottoms, bright trainers, jeans or jeggings. Makeup should not be worn and for Health
& Safety reasons jewellery cannot be loose or dangling.
Camp: You will see from the Calendar of Events that there is a date set for P6 camp at the end of
the session and not a P5 date. We have decided to move to this for two reasons. Firstly the cost
of two camps during your child’s primary education was proving too expensive for many families
and secondly Tynecastle, along with many other High Schools, are looking to provide a first year
residential experience which would incur even more cost. I am aware that for the parents/carers
of our new P6’s this will mean two consecutive years of expense but I felt it unfair for them to
miss out on the experience of a full residential camp. To provide further details and allow
maximum opportunity to save for the June camp I would like to meet with P6 parents on
Wednesday 1st September at 6.00 p.m. Please return the tear-off slip below.
Urgent – Your School Needs You!: We are delighted with the work the school has been
undertaking in order to achieve our Green Flag Eco Award. We are at the final stages where a
panel of judges visit the school to assess our achievements. You will see from the Calendar that
this will take place on 30th August and we need your help! Over the wet summer months the
school garden has sprouted and as this is a key element of our work we need to have it tamed
prior to the visit. I would like to ask for the help of any volunteers available after school on
Wednesday 25th August. Children are welcome to be part of this if they are supervised by their
parents/carers. If you have any gardening tools please bring them along with you. If not we
have a small selection available at school. If you cannot make this date but would be able to help
out prior to the 30th please get in touch with me as soon as possible.
Punctuality: Can I please ask for your support in making this a year where our children arrive in
school on time, ready to begin their learning along with the rest of the class. I appreciate that
occasionally circumstances develop outwith our control and we will always respond
sympathetically on those occasions but regular lateness impacts directly on your child and the rest
of the class.
E-mail: I apologise for the number of sheets of paper coming your way on the first day back and
would like to seriously consider the possibility of communicating with the majority of you
through e-mail in the future. Forms will be coming out shortly for the annual update with a
section for e-mail addresses to be inserted. Please complete this if you are happy to receive mail
from school in this manner.
Website: I am delighted with our new school website and all letters and information being shared
with pupils will be posted there. This will mean parents have direct access to letters which may
have gone astray! Copies of all health/medical forms can also be downloaded from the website.
I hope this will make life easier for everyone and look forward to monitoring the effectiveness of
this means of communication.
Answering Machine: In order to ensure all messages are received first thing in the morning we
will be purchasing an answering machine which will be in operation between 5.00 p.m. and 8.30
a.m. Please make sure you state clearly your child’s name and class and reason for absence.
Phone lines will be in operation as normal during school hours.
Tuck Shop: As our tuck shop will not be open for business until week beginning 6th September
could you please ensure your child has a snack and drink with them for break.
Thank you for all your support with all of the above! We look forward to working with you and your
child this session and are confident that together we can provide the best opportunities for everyone.
