                                     Christine Ann Roman
Christine Ann Roman, Ph. D., holds her doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Education.
Her specialization is vision and infancy. Dr. Roman also has the M. Ed in Early Childhood Special Education
and in Orientation and Mobility. She has a B.S. from Michigan State University in Visually
Handicapped/Elementary Education.

At the present, Christine is a private consultant in Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) Resources. She is also
presently serving Western Pennsylvania Hospital as the Director Pediatric VIEW Program and Consultant to the
American Printing House for the Blind as the Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) Project Leader. She also
currently serves in several related CVI Consultant positions.

Christine has taught courses at several universities and most recently at the University of Maryland where she
taught Cortical Visual Impairment. She has many publications to her credit including Cortical Visual
Impairment: An Approach to Assessment and Intervention, American Foundation for the Blind, NY, 2007.
Proposed publications of 2008 include Dodson Bur, B. and Roman, C. The Preschool O&M Screening and
Roman, C.A., Orientation and Mobility for students with Cortical Visual Impairment. In Blash, B. Wiener, W.
Welsh, R. (Eds.), Foundations of Orientation and Mobility.

Sunday Program Content:

           What is CVI?
           How is CVI diagnosed?
           What are characteristic behaviors of a child with a diagnosis of CVI?
           How can the CVI Scale data guide parents’ questions and increase involvement in their child’s
            educational program? Research shows that the greater the parental involvement in interventions,
            the greater the effectiveness.
           Parent will have an opportunity for Q&A, or to present their personal story.

Monday Program Content:
         Using the CVI Scale to move from assessment to intervention
         Using case study, look at a couple of different kinds of kids, both with CVI
         In small group work, identify goals and program strategies
         Discuss a good model for implementation
         Discuss direct service vs. consultation services for the student with CVI
         Discuss role and responsibility of the TVI, classroom teacher and para relative to the program
              interventions for the student with CVI
             Examine recent research from Maryland which provides the research base for Dr. Roman’s work
