Student Performance-Based Assessment Competition
Rules and Guidelines
SY2010-2011
Event Overview:
Students will be serving as a design consulting firm staff. As the consulting staff, the students
will collect information from a client. The client will present relevant information to all of the
student groups. Based on the information shared by the client, the consulting firms will need to
come up with a proposal, 2-D design, 3-D design, an executive summary and a PowerPoint
Presentation at the event. Prior to the event, students will submit a research paper on the
assigned topic. In addition, students will be taking a 50-question objective exam assessing
proficiency of Design Technology I standards. Students should be able to demonstrate
proficiency of both IET Core and Design Technology I standards.
Rules:
Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers may enter more than one team, but
no more than two teams. Additional team entries may be requested, if there are extra
slots. However there is an overall limit of 24 teams. Extra slots will be offered on a
first-come-first served basis.
Each team must have two members.
Each team should bring their own computers pre-loaded with appropriate software,
including the ZPrint software. (Please contact Ms. Sherilyn Lau if you do not have
the ZPrint program.)
Neighbor island schools may request computers to be provided, however, the school
will be responsible for providing their own software. The state will not be
responsible for compatibility and other technical issues.
All team members must be present during oral presentations. Disqualification will
result if all members are not present by the start of the oral competition.
All finalists must attend the final competition (exceptions will be made for family and
medical emergencies with written justification).
All team members must be dressed in appropriate professional attire. (See
professional attire guidelines.)
Awards:
Nominal prizes will be provided to written test winners.
Teams who place first, second and third overall will receive awards.
Competition Products:
Ten-Page Written Research Paper. The research paper must be received by
March 24, 2011 at OCISS, CIB, CTE—475 22nd Avenue, Room 217, Honolulu,
Hawaii 96816. The topic of the research paper is as follows:
Students would provide an analysis of the physical injuries sustained by war veterans
and the challenges these wounded veterans face upon return to civilian life. Research
should include data on the types of physical injuries, the numbers of wounded
veterans, and the challenges faced in everyday living situations.
o Title Page: Name of School, Name of Team Members, Name of Lead Teacher
and Other Participating Teachers, Name of Principal, School Address, City,
State and Zip Code and Competition Date.
o Table of Contents: Components of the report should be presented with
accompanying page numbers.
o Body Contents:
Executive Summary
Analysis of the Physical Injuries Sustained by War Veterans and the
Challenges These Wounded Veterans Face Upon Return to Civilian
Life. Analysis should include statistics and data.
o References: Use APA Standards.
o Appendix
Research Paper Format Standards.
o The body of the research paper must be limited to ten (10) pages. (Title Page,
Table of Contents, Charts, Graphics, Reference Pages and Appendix are NOT
included in the ten (10) page limit.
o Text must be in 12 point, Times New Roman font.
o Margins should be 1 inch margins (left, right, top, bottom).
o Headings and subheadings should be used.
o Page numbers should be in the Table of Contents.
o Page numbers should begin with the Executive Summary and end with the
final page of the Appendix.
o Page numbers should be on the bottom, center of each page.
o Lines should be double-spaced, typed, except in the case of charts and/or other
graphics.
o Pages must be 8.5 inches by 11 inches.
o Research papers should be left bound.
o Plagiarism of information will result in point deductions and/or
disqualification. Use of all outside information must be cited.
o APA standards for citations and references must be used.
o Missing information and/or formatting errors will result in deduction of points.
Product Deliverables.
o Copy of 2-D Design.
o File in ZPrint for Water-Tight 3D Model. Other specifications will be
provided on the competition day.
o PowerPoint Presentation which includes a justification and supporting
information/data for design/model.
o All deliverables should be submitted on the flash drive provided. Students are
responsible for ensuring all files have been transferred properly.
Oral Presentation Guidelines.
o Each team will have 20 minutes to present their plan using PowerPoint. No
other programs may be used unless they are embedded into the PowerPoint
presentation.
o Each member of the team must have a speaking part in the presentation.
o Upon completion, judges will conduct a 10-minute question and answer
(Q&A) session. Judges will direct questions to each member of the team.
Each member must be able to respond to judge’s question.
o In addition to using the PowerPoint slides, students will be expected to use the
3D model in their presentation to explain design decisions, show what worked
and what did not work and how those design elements could be improved on.
The 3D model should also be used to explain why a design element did not
work as intended.
o Professional dress is required of all team members. (See professional attire
guidelines for details.)
o Teams should use their own laptop for their presentation. An LCD projector
with PC-compatible connector will be provided. Please Note: If using MAC
laptop, you must provide your own adaptor.
o If laptops were requested for the competition, that competition laptop will be
provided for use during the oral presentation. However, participants will be
limited to the software loaded on the laptop.
Scoring:
Scores for the research paper, written test, 2-D and 3-D design, and oral presentation will be
combined to determine the winners. Point deductions will be made for non-adherence to
guidelines and criteria.
