                    42nd Annual IRG Conference Meeting

The 42nd Annual meeting of the International Research Group on Wood Protection (IRG-
WP) was held in Queenstown, New Zealand, 8-12 May 2011.

The IRG was launched as an independent research group in January 1969. Initially IRG
was comprised of 22 scientists from nine countries. Today the group had more than 350
members from 55 countries around the world. Membership includes scientists and
academics from research organisations and universities, personal from wood protecting
companies, policymakers, bio-security organisations, forest owners and growers and
registration authorities.

Over 180 delegates from 25 countries attended the 42nd IRG conference. The opening
addresses were given by Mr Jack Norton, current President of the IRG, and Dr Max
Kennedy from New Zealand Ministry of Science & Innovation with Murray Sturgeon
Managing Director of Nelson Pine giving the first Key note speech. The conference
programme covered biology, test methodology & assessment, wood protecting chemicals,
processes and properties and environmental aspects over 4 days period. Two special
sessions; Borates and Phytosanitation & wood Packaging were very well received and
stimulated interesting discussions. This conference has a focus on promoting and
developing young scientists and offers a platform for debate and discussion. Key aspects
are the net working, sharing and presenting of new work and ideas to the people involved
in all aspects of wood protection particularly technologies and scientific aspects of timber

The 2012 conference is being organised by the Malaysian Timber Industry Board and is
scheduled for 6-10th May in Kuala Lumpur.
