FOI Case Reference: 15168 27 July 2010

Dear Mr Sullivan,

Thank you for your e-mail of 8 June 2010 regarding your request for statistics
relating to crime committed by foreign nationals. Firstly, may I apologise for
the delay in providing you with a full response.

Your request has been handled as a request for information under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000. We are now in a position to provide a full
reply to your request.

The Home Office collects Recorded Crime statistics from the police on all
offences within the Recorded Crime Series. The Recorded Crime data
concentrates solely on the numbers of offences recorded and detected by the
police. No details are collected on the victim or offender unless defined by
statute (i.e. there are a number of sexual offence classifications which specify
the age group of the victim). In summary, Recorded Crime offences are
counted on an aggregate basis and the nationality of the offender cannot be
specified.

I can, however refer you to the Ministry of Justice website where you will be
able to access the following statistics on race and the Criminal Justice
System:

 Stop and Searches by ethnicity
       Arrests by ethnicity
       Court proceedings by ethnicity
 Prison population including foreign nationals
The following links to the MOJ website will give you access to the statistics as
above:

justice-system-2008-09c1.pdf

Should you have any further questions on these MOJ statistics, please
contact James Riley on 0203 334 4971 or via emails:
xxxxxxx.xxxxxxx@xxxxxxx.xxx.xxx.xx or xxxx.xxxxxx@xxxxxxx.xxx.xxx.xx

I am sorry that I have been unable to assist you any further with your request.
I would like to assure you that we have provided you with all relevant
information that the Home Office holds.

If you are dissatisfied with this response you may request an independent
internal review of our handling of your request by submitting a complaint
within two months to the address below, quoting reference 15168. If you ask
for an internal review, it would be helpful if you could say why you are
dissatisfied with the response.

As part of any internal review the Department's handling of your information
request will be reassessed by staff who were not involved in providing you
with this response. If you remain dissatisfied after this internal review, you
would have a right of complaint to the Information Commissioner as
established by section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act.

Yours sincerely,
