EGGER CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC FOR 2011
Striving for additional gains in market share – future investments being
implemented in several plants
Ulrich Bühler, Head of Marketing and Sales EGGER Group, is cautiously
optimistic for the coming 2011 year. The positive development of the German
nd
economy in the 2 half of 2010 and the resulting increase in demand in several
European countries give rise to hope that the upswing may continue. On the
other hand, the crisis in some European countries along with rising raw material
prices are putting a slight damper on expectations.
EGGER improved its capacity utilisation and significantly increased its sales volume in
the first half of the 2010/11 business year (from May to October 2010) compared to
the prior year. Market share was expanded in large parts of Europe in 2010, even in
view of industry consolidation. In the months of May through October, EGGER
increased its turnover by 18% to EUR 871.3 million compared to the same period last
year. Profitability was down slightly due to rising raw material prices, especially
chemicals and wood. EBITDA fell below the prior-year value by 5% at EUR 121.3
million. Equity increased to 37% in the first six months. “Our goal for 2011 is to grow
faster than the market within the wood-based material industry and to further reinforce
our position,” said Ulrich Bühler at the press conference in the course of BAU in
Munich.
ECONOMIC GROWTH IN GERMANY
The performance of the German economy was surprisingly positive in 2010. With
growth of 3.75%, the strongest national economy in Europe proved to be an economic
driving force that benefited several Central and Eastern European countries in
particular. Even though growth will not continue at this rate, economic analysts at the
World Bank do expect a plus of 2.5%. Economic analysts expect the global economy
to grow by 2.9% in 2011. Total growth in the past year amounted to 3.1%.
The Eurozone grew by 0.5% in 2010 and 0.9% is expected for the current year.
EGGER assumes that market development will vary across Europe. Developments in
Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux and Russia are expected to remain stable.
Consumer sentiments in Germany are particularly positive, which is expected to have
an impact on the furniture industry. On the other hand, countries such as Portugal,
Spain and Ireland are viewed rather critically due to their general economic weakness.
The company expects that markets in Eastern Europe will recover from economic
turbulence and that a positive trend is going to re-establish itself. Evaluating the
situation in countries with major government cost-cutting programmes is going to be
difficult.

MUNICH, 17 JANUARY 2011
A review of the past year shows that EGGER was able to increase its turnover in
nearly all sales regions, even though developments paralleled the overall economic
conditions. Turnover figures in German-speaking regions, Great Britain, the Benelux
states and Russia were very good in the first half of the current business year for
EGGER. Sales activities in the Turkish market were significantly expanded following
the acquisition of a 71.5% interest in the edging manufacturer ROMA Plastik. Bühler
expects these trends to continue in 2011, although they are highly dependent on the
stability policies of the respective European countries.
RISING RAW MATERIAL PRICES REDUCE PROFITABILITY
Raw material prices also continue to be an issue. According to a recently published
survey conducted by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, 90% of
industrial enterprises are complaining about rising prices as well as increasingly
shorter terms for delivery contracts. “The volatility of raw material purchase prices is
making long-term planning more and more difficult,” Bühler says. Purchase prices for
preliminary products such as wood, resins and impregnating resins have increased
tremendously. EGGER believes this trend is going to continue in the near future. Next
to raw material prices, freight costs have also increased significantly. Regional freight
capacities are also not sufficient in all cases, so that additional cost pressure is
building up.
Promoting the thermal utilisation of wood is particularly important for the European
wood-based material industry. Competition is clearly being distorted here and this
needs to be addressed. “We are counting on integrated plants where wood is first
used in production. Wood residues and recycled wood that cannot be used in
production are utilised as thermal fuel in the company’s own biomass power plants to
generate energy for production. The use of wood as a renewable raw material is
thereby optimised throughout its life cycle and climate protection is assured.
Politicians should also be paying more attention to this aspect,” Bühler says.
INVESTMENT PROGRAMME CONTINUES
Generally positive expectations at EGGER are illustrated by the ongoing, highly
ambitious investment programme. A number of new projects have been started.
Significant growth investments are currently underway in Radauti, where a new OSB
plant is being built. The OSB business has developed very positively over the last few
years. High demand sometimes led to customer supply bottlenecks, which will
become a thing of the past with the commissioning of the new plant in Romania at the
end of 2011. EGGER is thereby further solidifying its market position and expertise in
this segment. Growing demand from countries in Central and Eastern Europe will be
satisfied by OSB production in Radauti. “We believe there is a need for major new
investments in this market,” Bühler explains before adding: “The rapid recovery of the
Eastern European states following the economic crisis supports our positive
assessment of these markets.” 05

Radauti is being consistently expanded into an integrated site. A resin plant is also
being built at this time, after EGGER moved into the new administrative building in the
autumn of 2010.
EGGER invested a total of EUR 64 million in the first half of the 2010/11 business year
(compared to EUR 49 million in the prior year).

ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING AS A MODEL FOR TRADE
FAIR APPEARANCES
A modern, functional and sustainable office architecture has been
implemented with wood-based materials in the new administrative building at
the EGGER production site in Radauti, Romania. EGGER has packaged this
concept one to one for the trade fair appearance at BAU 2011, displaying
applications for all of its products.
EGGER is presenting the office, living, shop, hotel and kitchen segments on a
total area of 450 m² (4,844 square feet). In addition to the wood-based materials
on display, the focus is also on many new services through the further
development of digital solutions.
EGGER is presenting itself with a new trade fair concept under the motto “Living and
th nd
Working with Wood – Progress for Joint Success” at the BAU in Munich (17 to 22
January 2011), the world-leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems.
Rather than focusing on individual products from the decorative, structural and flooring
segments which has been the case in the past, concrete application situations are
now going to take centre stage. Based on the model of the administrative building in
Radauti, which was constructed exclusively from its own products, EGGER is
therefore highlighting its expertise as a partner for wood processing trades. Innovative
and modern materials in matching decors and colours support trend-conforming
designs, functionality and efficiency. “Our new trade fair appearance focuses on
EGGER as a full-range supplier. Based on our new administrative building, we are
able to show what our decorative and constructive products can do in actual
applications. Modern wood frame construction combines contemporary architecture
with environmental compatibility, highlighting our position as a full-range supplier,”
says Hubert Höglauer, Head of Marketing EGGER Group.
LIVING AND WORKING WITH WOOD – PROGRESS FOR JOINT
SUCCESS
In the exhibition stand with an area of 450 m² (4,844 square feet), EGGER is
presenting its entire product range at the umbrella brand level for the first time through
application-oriented exhibits for all situations. The office, living, shop, hotel and kitchen
segments include the product range for furniture and interior design as well as wood
construction and laminate flooring. Numerous areas of application for the private and
commercial sectors based on the administrative building communicate the trade fair
motto “Living and Working with Wood – Progress for Joint Success”.
In addition to the individual segments, the interior of the exhibition stand features a
marketplace with a library offering an overview of the last 50 years at EGGER. A
comfortable lounge also provides space for customer consultations.

MUNICH, 17 JANUARY 2011
In the decorative segment, EGGER is focusing on acoustics and fire protection.
Acoustically effective rear panels grace the exhibition stand lounge while the
innovative “Light + Acoustics” lighting concept is on display in the hotel segment.
Certified wall structures, which EGGER has transferred one to one from the
composition of the administrative building in Radauti to the trade fair, are considered a
wood construction innovation. The building was implemented using low-energy
construction with passive house components and, as a multi-storey wood
construction, constitutes a pilot project in Romania. Among other materials, timber and
formaldehyde-free bonded EUROSTRAND OSB 4 TOP boards were used for the
reinforcing wall panels as well as the ceiling, floor and roof elements.
EGGER also pursues the continuous further development of its laminate flooring
product portfolio in order to offer comprehensive solutions for comfortable living to its
customers. The latest result is cork flooring, a laminate flooring category first
presented in January 2011. EGGER is also exhibiting the new long floorboard format
for its Megafloor collection.
NEW SAMPLE SHOP OFFERS ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
Starting in 2011, EGGER is offering simplified sample ordering for fabricators in its
redesigned online samples shop. Sample of the entire ZOOM collection, the
Megafloor, Floorline, Emotion, Vivo and Spirit laminate flooring collections and all
constructive wood-based materials can be ordered at any time by visiting
www.egger.com/mustershop. Comprehensive filter options – for example by decor
family, hue or, in the flooring segment, by aspects such as the floorboard format and
texture – allow customers to easily obtain an overview of the entire product range. The
new sample shop also features extensive detailed information about the wood-based
materials offered by EGGER and allows the status of orders to be tracked online at
any time.
NEW POSSIBILITIES IN THE VIRTUAL DESIGN STUDIO (VDS)
EGGER is also presenting the further development of its digital solutions at the BAU
trade fair. The Virtual Design Studio is no longer limited to the two versions LIVE (one
to one decor visualisation on actual furniture carcasses) and HD (decor visualisation
on a high-definition screen).
EGGER is offering a special highlight for all iPad users with the VDS MOBILE
application. All decors from the online sample shop are also available in the
application and can be ordered from the iPad effective immediately.
VDS HD 2.0 is a new version of the EGGER room design visualisation software. The
application of decors can be shown directly at the point of sale. Samples can also be
recognised in the system via an interface and displayed directly in the room sets. The
new VDS PROFI 2.0 allows EGGER customers to design custom furniture and
laminate flooring decors.

MORE THAN JUST A WORKPLACE
EGGER constructed an energy-efficient administrative building in Radauti,
Romania over a period of just five months. Intended to define the future
EGGER company architecture, it will serve as a model for other buildings
within the group.
The Austrian architect Bruno Moser developed the modular wood frame
construction concept, which has been implemented using sustainable EGGER
products. Featuring low-energy construction, the building offers space for 170
employees.
In order to offer the best possible working conditions to its employees, the Tyrolean
family company EGGER decided to construct an office building for the plant in
Radauti, Romania. The new building meets high functional, aesthetic and
environmental standards. From the natural resource wood, EGGER creates high-
quality products found in many aspects of everyday life. This is why EGGER
implemented its motto “Living and Working with Wood” in the office building in
Radauti, using the constructive and decorative wood-based materials produced by the
EGGER Group. “For us as a full-range supplier of wood-based materials, it was
particularly important to construct a building that illustrates the application of our entire
product range. ‘Living and Working with Wood’ is the focal point,” says Walter Schiegl,
Head of Production/Technical EGGER Group.
Thanks to its modular structure, the innovative architectural concept of the new office
building is highly flexible and can be adapted to the requirements of any location. It
therefore represents the basis of future administrative buildings within the EGGER
Group and will define the company architecture.
ARCHITECTURAL CONTEST REVEALED INNOVATIVE CONCEPT
Bruno Moser, an Austrian architect from Breitenbach, was the winner of a contest that
eventually resulted in the construction of the new administrative building in Radauti.
The idea for the layout and size of the building was derived from EGGER OSB boards
with the maximum format of 11.50 x 2.80 m (37.7’ x 9.2’). It forms the base grid, both
for the floor plan and for the elevations.
Visual design elements of the office building include the copper facade, which makes
the wood construction building more lively. Behind that, the highly modern wood frame
construction of the three-storey building with a partial basement provides the
necessary stability. For the reinforcing wall panels as well as the ceiling, floor and roof
elements, EGGER consistently used its structural wood construction products
including timber and formaldehyde-free bonded OSB boards.

PLEASANT ROOM ATMOSPHERE WITH EGGER PRODUCTS
In order to meet the needs of its employees with optimised solutions, EGGER
developed its own line of office furniture. The harmonised, integrated system offers the
right solutions for all office situations and combines functionality with design.
Components for the furniture were produced in the company’s own pre-fabricated
furniture component plant.
In addition to all basic materials such as melamine faced chipboard and MDF boards,
the EUROLIGHT lightweight boards and compact laminates with matching colours and
decors were used for the interior design of the offices. EGGER also emphasised good
room acoustics. This was achieved through the use of decorative, sound-absorbent
EGGER ProAcoustic boards in furniture and built-in cabinets.
WASTE HEAT FROM PRODUCTION HEATS THE BUILDING
In addition to combining low-energy construction and passive house components, the
environmental compatibility of the building is mainly illustrated by the use of waste
heat from production. The entire building is heated and cooled through the ceiling and
is also equipped with sub floor convectors, which can be locally controlled by the
employees themselves. EGGER generates the required energy using waste heat from
the adjacent wood-based material production facility.

GOLD CERTIFICATE OFFERS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR
WOOD CONSTRUCTION
The EGGER administrative building in Romania achieves a grade of 84%
under the DGNB building certification system.
The certification of buildings in regards to their sustainability constitutes proof
of their environmental impact. EGGER has obtained certification for a company
building for the first time, receiving the DGNB gold seal for the administrative
building thanks to the use of its environmentally friendly products.
Sustainability and the environment are very important to EGGER. “We follow the basic
principle of sustainability because we know that our actions today determine the
quality of our living space in the future,” explains Jana Sprockhoff, Product
Management Constructive. For EGGER, the logical conclusion was to have the
energy-efficient and sustainable administrative building certified according to the
criteria for the German seal of approval for sustainable construction (DGNB) by the
“Österreichische Gesellschaft für Nachhaltige Immobilienwirtschaft” (ÖGNI) (Austrian
Society for Sustainable Real Estate). Obtaining the gold seal with compliance of 84%
once again illustrates the tremendous climate protection potential of EGGER wood
and wood-based materials. The building is one of the first pilot projects to receive gold
certification under the nationally adapted DGNB system.
EGGER EPDS SUPPORT BUILDING CERTIFICATION
Depending on the usage profile, the DGNB certification system incorporates
approximately 60 criteria from the fields of ecology, economy, sociocultural and
functional aspects, technology, processes and location. Detailed information on all
criteria must be provided. Environmental product declarations (EPDs) confirmed by
independent experts made the building certification process much easier for EGGER.
EPDs contain information for the usage phase in the form of tests and confirmations of
reaction to fire, structural-physical properties such as heat insulation and acoustics,
and the emission behaviour of wood-based materials. They also provide the
information for each construction material required for planning and tendering along
with documentation for the building pass and building manual. For the end of the
lifecycle, EPDs specify possible scenarios for disposal and reuse along with the
resulting environmental impact. This relevant information was directly incorporated in
the evaluation of ecological criteria, contributing to the overall DGNB certificate rating.

MORE THAN LAMINATE – LANEO, THE NEW EGGER
FLOORING COLLECTION
With Laneo, EGGER is bringing an innovative flooring category to market in
order to develop new customer groups. As an innovation driver, EGGER is
offering Laneo – a product defined by the following characteristics: quiet,
warm, soft and robust.
A pan-European customer survey conducted by EGGER shows that significant
additional market and customer potential remains for flooring with clearly
recognisable customer benefits. In order to win these customers, flooring must
exhibit the following characteristics: quiet, warm, soft and robust. EGGER is
responding to these requirements with the innovation Laneo, intending to
further expand its market share in the highly competitive flooring market.
Over the last few years, EGGER has been able to develop extensive know-how in the
production of direct print laminate flooring (DPR) at its Brilon plant. “Our claim is to be
the innovation leader in direct print flooring technology. We realised early on that this
technology opens up tremendous opportunities for new product solutions,” says
Stefan Pletzer, Head of Sales/Marketing EGGER Retail Products. Now EGGER wants
to realise these opportunities step by step in order to offer completely new solutions.
This is emphasised by the new Laneo collection. With its eight trend-conforming
woodgrain decors and the perfectly fitting, designed surfaces, it has the visual
appearance of laminate flooring. But in terms of touch and acoustics, it turns out that
EGGER has implemented an entirely new product with Laneo. This innovative flooring
category consists of a combination of proven high density fibreboard (HDF) with high
density cork layers that constitute an entirely new development. “With this new cork-
plus technology, we are able to offer our customers flooring that is warm, soft and
quiet like cork flooring and also nearly as robust as laminate flooring,” Stefan Pletzer
explains.
GAINING MARKET SHARE WITH INNOVATIONS
Classic laminate flooring scores points with a variety of decors, easy installation and
cleaning, robustness, longevity, low structural height and a favourable price-
performance ratio. But in order to win new customer groups for a hard floor covering,
the flooring has to offer more than laminate – it needs to be quieter when walking on it,
leave a warmer impression and feel softer. “For EGGER as a company with a
pronounced focus on ecology and sustainability, only a natural material could be
considered for this development. As a result, we quickly settled on cork,” says Pletzer.
The challenge was to transfer the positive characteristics of cork to a product with
functionality similar to that of laminate flooring.
14
BAU PRESS FOLDER
TH
MUNICH, 17 JANUARY 2011
EGGER took advantage of its extensive direct printing experience accumulated at the
Brilon plant, and developed a solution allowing it to apply a decor and texture to an
alternative material. The result is the new Laneo collection, a cork-HDF-cork sandwich
board. EGGER refers to the solution as cork-plus technology. The Laneo collection
from EGGER is offered under the motto “More than Laminate”. The new flooring will
be presented for the first time at BAU 2011 in Munich.
HIGH COMPRESSION AS THE KEY FACTOR
“The special feature of our new collection is the high compression of the printed cork
layers. This allows us to achieve the stability essential for our understanding of
quality,” says Stefan Pletzer. The special cork used for Laneo is approximately four
times as dense as natural cork, making it particularly resilient – even over a long
lifespan.
The new flooring features a multilayer structure. A finely pored cork layer forms the
underside of the floorboards, simultaneously acting as underlay and therefore
reducing impact and ambient sound. This is followed by the proven high-density
fibreboard “EGGER HDF swell stop plus”. An especially fine pored and highly
compressed cork layer which is printable is applied to the top. Amorim is supplying
this new product exclusively to its development partner EGGER. Laneo therefore
constitutes an entirely independent product as well as a distinct new flooring category.
“This highly compressed cork layer forms the basis for the true innovation of Laneo.
With our DPR direct printing technology, we are able to perfectly apply classic flooring
decors with wood effects,” Stefan Pletzer explains.
TEXTURES AND DECORS COMPLEMENT THE APPEARANCE
However, a premium appearance is not only created by decors. The surface texture
specialist EGGER has invested a lot of time and energy into the interplay of decors
and textures during the development of Laneo. “That is how we optimise the
appearance of our flooring. Our new technology permits a texture that is perfectly
coordinated with the decor,” Stefan Pletzer explains. EGGER is using the proven
Rustic texture for Laneo, which highlights the robustness and durability of the flooring.
With Laneo, EGGER is counting exclusively on newly developed woodgrain decors
based on the looks and trends currently in demand. The entire colour spectrum from
light to dark is covered, including trend-conforming decors with grey hues alongside
classic-elegant choices.

Heightened environmental awareness among end customers is another insight gained
from the customer survey. With Laneo, EGGER has met the strict requirements to
