APPLICATION OF SUPERFICIAL HEAT AND COLD BY NURSES IN THE
                        DIALYSIS UNIT

The following is in addition to the hospital policy – Application of
superficial heat and cold by nurses and midwives.

Cold packs can be used for all the indications listed in the above policy. In
addition cold should be applied to vascular access when there has been a
cannulation “Bomb”. The cold packs are kept in the freezer section of the
refrigerator in the medication room.

Hot packs can be used to treat cramps during dialysis. If the cramp continues
after application of heat seek medical review. NB take care to follow policy as
application of heat to the lower extremity in a patient with peripheral neuropathy
is contraindicated. Please note the instructions for microwaving.
