4 ► Patient Interviews C Sloane & S Dixon ASAP
Sandra Dixon, Marion Allinson & Colin Sloane explained to the group that
patients who had undergone thoracic surgery (prior to Sandra Dixon being in
post) had been invited to take part in a patient interview about their
experience. A total of 7 patients were interviewed - the outcome was that in
general they were happy with the service, however there were areas where
issues were identified; pre-assessment waiting times in the department, day
of admission and transport. It was also noted that all the patients had had
their surgery dates cancelled & delayed. Patient information was felt to be
good although some did not read it; all felt that the consultation with the
surgeon was very good.
A report has been written from the patient interviews; Marion Allinson and the
User Partnership Group have also developed a DVD from the patient
interviews which will be used as a model for other cancer sites.
The intention is to repeat patient interviews following the introduction of the
patient education programme. This is currently still being organised but it is
planned to be held every Tuesday. Patients will be invited to attend this prior
to their surgery and will receive education/information from; physio, dietician,
surgeon, pain team & information regarding adjuvant treatment.
Sandra Dixon informed the group that she has written a number of patient
information booklets including a booklet regarding discharge, it was
requested that all booklets be shared with the group.
To circulate the patient interview report and recently developed patient
information booklets.
5 ► Patient Experience Survey T Hiley & C Sloane ASAP
The group decided that the survey would be sent out by the end of June
2012 (unless already completed recent survey). Colin Sloane informed the
group that he is happy to analyse the results but each individual CNS would
have to input the data into SNAP.
Tracy Hiley to forward the changes made by the group to Colin Sloane to
amend and share with the group.

A total of 21 support group surveys have been returned so far, 16 patients
have expressed an interest in attending a Mesothelioma support group.
Simon Bolton recently attended a support group at Papworth; this is held
every month with approx. 50 people are attending. They had a guest speaker
talking about symptom control followed by an informal discussion. Simon
Bolton then attended a committee meeting which discussed finances and
funding. The group has proved to be very successful and has been running
now for 18 months.
Members noted that they are still awaiting feedback whether the application
to the YCN cancer nursing development fund for the development of the
Mesothelioma support group has been successful.
In the next few weeks Simon Bolton will be sending out a questionnaire to the
CNS for individuals at local MDT’s to complete. These have been developed
to help identify how core members of the MDT view the current state with
emphasis on diagnosis, staging and the role of the specialist Mesothelioma
MDT as well as access to surgery and specialist nursing support.
The completed questionnaires are to be sent back to Simon Bolton.
