Brebeuf College School – CSAC Minutes of the Meeting – Tuesday, October 28, 2008 Attendance: Louise Whitfield, Terence Donnelly, Raymond Taylor, Darlene Canton, Vivienne Coelho, Bonaventure Karuta, Linda Snook, Lilia Sulit, Anthony Azzopardi, Brother Henry Spencer, Greg Parnham, Bridget Barron, Amy Cerre, Luisa Lampitoc, Debbie McMahon, Paul Santos, Judy Taylor, Patrick Vianna Regrets: Gina Morrison, Zara Nalian, Alex Edward Meeting convened at 7:10 p.m. AGENDA ITEM DISCUSSION ACTION Opening Prayer By Brother Henry Spencer Welcome and Louise Whitfield introduced herself as the Chair for 2008-2009 and started a Introductions round table introduction of everyone present. Regrets/Quorum Louise advised that she had received 3 regrets. Quorum was established. Approval of Agenda Louise asked if anyone would like to add anything to the Agenda. There were no additions. The Agenda was approved by Raymond Taylor and seconded by Terence Donnelly. Approval of The Minutes for September 30, 2008 were reviewed. Terence Donnelly Darlene to add September 30, 2008 suggested that we add “Action Items” to the end of the document to track what “Action Item” Minutes needs to be done and who will do it. The Minutes were approved by Terence Chart to end of Donnelly and seconded by Lilia Sulit. Minutes. Treasurer’s Report The Summary of Source and Use of Funds Report for the period October 1, 2008 to October 28, 2008 was reviewed by Raymond Taylor. We received $500.00 from the Ministry of Education in Parental Involvement Funding which must be used by the end of the current CSAC year. CSAC has a total bank balance of $4,515.05 as of October 28, 2008. We also have $300.11 in Dominion Gift Cards and $400.00 in Chapters Gift Cards. TAPCE Report Darlene Canton gave a short introduction regarding the mandate of TAPCE. They are the Toronto voice of parents and guardians of children in the publicly funded Catholic system of education. Following are some TAPCE updates: - there will be a free CSAC Training Conference at the CEC on November 1st which will have a number of interesting workshops available to anyone who is interested. - TAPCE has recently applied for charitable status in order to be able to issue tax receipts for donations - the TAPCE Commissioning Ceremony is coming up at the CEC on November 24th and everyone is invited - the TAPCE Principal of Excellence Award for the 2007-2008 year will be presented at the Commissioning Ceremony - at the last TAPCE meeting, Paul Crawford (Superintendent) made a presentation regarding the Toronto Police School Resource Officers who have now been placed in 8 of our secondary schools. Their prime goal is to develop, nurture and expand on positive program-based relationships with students, staff and community members with the aim of enabling safe and healthy school communities - Darlene advised that due to funding cutbacks at the TCDSB, TAPCE is asking Treasurer to each CSAC to consider donating $100 to assist them with their mandate. After prepare $100 some discussion it was decided to donate $100 to TAPCE. The decision was donation to approved by Raymond Taylor, seconded by Terence Donnelly and carried TAPCE. unanimously. -2- Chair’s Report Louise Whitfield reported on some upcoming events: - Friday, November 7 – Angel Foundation Fundraiser – An Evening to Feed the Soul Dinner Event at DaVinci Banquet Hall - Saturday, November 8 – People for Education conference at York University - Saturday, November 8 – Special Services conference at the TCDSB on Recognizing the Early Signs of Teenage Depression and Bipolar Disorder - Saturday, November 8 – Special Services and SEAC Education and Resource Fair at the TCDSB offering learning disability support - Saturday, November 8 – Special Services information meeting on Preparing Your Child with Learning Disabilities for Transition to Secondary School - Tuesday, November 11 – Internet Safety workshop at Loretto Abbey at 7 pm Principal’s Report Mr. Azzopardi acknowledged and thanked CSAC parents for all their support. Following are some upcoming events (most of these are past events): - Awards Night was October 8th - Grade 9 Curriculum Night was October 16th - Brebeuf Family Communion breakfast was October 19 th - Grade 10 Literacy test is on April 2, 2009 Mr. Azzopardi advised that Friday, October 24 th was a PA Day. The focus for staff that day was on student success and they also worked on school goals. The four pillars are literacy, numeracy, pathways and Catholicity, community, caring, culture. They are working with a team of teachers to set two goals per pillar. 1. Catholicity, Culture, Community and Caring – to build on student leadership opportunities – to build on further developing a caring community at Brebeuf Last year, the Board surveyed students in secondary schools about how they felt about different aspects of their school and approximately 60 grade 10 and 12 Brebeuf students participated. 2. Literacy – to further build on the excellent OSSLT success rates of Brebeuf students in academic level courses – to increase the OSSLT success rate of Brebeuf students in applied level English courses and among the English Language Learners in our school 3. Numeracy – to increase student performance on open-ended questions related to problem solving on the EQAO Grade 9 Math assessment – to increase the Grade 9 EQAO success rate of students in applied level mathematics 4. Pathways – to increase student enrolment in Co-Operative Education by 0.5% (approximately 6 students) – to collect data and investigate which pathway program(s) Brebeuf should consider (such as Dual Credits, High Skills Specialist or a Fast Forward) in order to better serve students who are at risk and to begin implementation. PA Day Afternoon - Safe Schools – Bullying – the school must develop a formal plan for bullying and procedures related to progressive discipline and suspensions (Bill 212) Upcoming events: - Grade 10 and 12 retreats – November 7th and October 29th - Asset survey – Thursday and Friday this week - Early warning letters have already been sent out - Friday, October 31st – Halloween Dance - November 5th – Take your Kids to Work Day - November 7th – Club Brebeuf (money raised for charity) - November 13th – Grade 8 Open House - November 14th – Report Cards will be sent home - November 20th – Parent Teacher Interviews -3- Ray Taylor asked Mr. Azzopardi about the uniform expectations for Halloween Day. Mr. Azzopardi indicated that he was not aware of anything on the calendar and so as far as he knew it was a regular uniform day. He indicated he would consult with staff. Mr. Azzopardi reported that the Grade 9 enrolment projection for next year is 280 students. Eco-Schools – Brebeuf Environmental Club will be looking at ways to participate in the TCDSB Eco-School program. Some of the ideas to participate are having students clean up the grounds, initiating a blue box recycling program and beginning energy and garbage audits. The school’s goal is to reach Bronze status. One of the parents inquired about what is covered by the Activity Fee and Mr. Azzopardi advised that it covers the cost of a student agenda, combination lock, Grade 9 orientation retreat, TTC cards and a yearbook. Mr. Azzopardi advised that he would respond to the request by CSAC members to investigate de-semestering our math course for Grade 9 students so that they De-Semestering would receive math instruction all year long. Several parents volunteered to be a Committee part of the De-Semestering Committee: Louise Whitfield, Ray Taylor and Zara Preliminary Nalian. This Committee will prepare a report for the November CSAC meeting. Report due at November CSAC meeting for discussion among parents. Lockdown Mr. Azzopardi showed a video on the Toronto Police School Lockdown Procedures Video Procedures. There will be a lockdown practice at the school in the next few weeks. Students are asked to share school safety information with the administration. The school administration is very aware of the “code of silence” among students and is respectful of students coming forward to report information. The school uses preventative strategies regarding student safety. There are approximately 30 cameras inside and outside of the school for security purposes. Other Business Canopy – This was requested last year for the school’s sports teams. This seminar will help parents minimize potential risks by effectively planning for those situations which will occur during the best years of their children’s lives.
