Simple Machines and Work Learning Menu Upon completion of the learning menu students will know and be able to do the following: 1. Identify the structure and function of 6 simple machines. 2. Apply the use of simple machines in everyday situations. 3. Analyze simple mechanical devices and describe what the various parts are for All resources for the learning menu may also be found on the 8th grade class wiki. All parts of the learning menu are to be completed by Tuesday, November 23rd. Level 1: Complete 4 of the following (10 points each) Note: #2 is required. The parts completed for Level 1 should be turned in using hard copy. 1. Go to the website, click on each of the simple machines. Watch the video for each and write down two examples of each type of simple machine. Watch the video. Complete the quiz at the end and print your results (turn in your printed quiz when you are finished). 3. Go to the website brainpop.com, search Simple Machines. You may watch the videos and complete the test for up to two of the following, print and turn in completed tests: a. Levers b. Pulleys c. Assembly line d. Wheel and Axle e. Gears f. Inclined plane 4. Complete the mechanical advantage calculations worksheet. Level 2: Complete 2 of the following (15 points each) The parts completed for Level 2 should be turned in using hardcopy. 1. Pulley activity (*from text book) a. Go to PHSchool.com i. Web code: cgp-3043 b. Identify which type of pulley is needed to lift the boy, the refrigerator and the piano. c. Fill in the table using what you find out from the activity. Write a song or a rap that identifies the six different types of simple machines and how they make work easier or faster. Perform this for your teacher and turn in your lyrics. Level 3: Complete 1 of the following (30 points) You may complete your chosen activity with a partner or individually. Any written part should be saved in a Google doc and shared with your science teacher. 1. Chilean mine rescue activity. Complete all parts of the handout. 2. Rube Goldberg: Complete all parts of the handout. 3. Using the resources available in class, devise and carry out an experiment to test how a simple machine makes work easier or faster. You should write a lab report using the same format we have used thus far this year.
