SM11901 In Search of a winning combination: Numbers vs. Morale, Firepower vs. Experience Speaker: Dana Lombardy Fri 7:00:00 PM
Description: CONQUEST WAR COLLEGE - Military units have "personalities." Squads, platoons, and even divisions are more than just the sum of their soldiers, weapons, and
equipment. To what degree do the intangibles of morale, leadership, and experience play a role in battle? Early warfare game designs often emphasize leadership and morale, but
these factors were as critical to opposing regiments and divisions in World War II operations as they were to a Greek phalanx or to one of Napoleon's battalions. Dana Lombardy
will present a seminar supporting his creative game system concept that uses no combat factors for divisions. Game Demonstration follows in same room.

Description: CONQUEST WAR COLLEGE - Matt DeLaMater, designer of Legacy of Glory Napoleonic miniatures rules (1990, 2nd edition under development), published Napo-
leon Journal with Dana Lombardy (1996-2000). Dana presents an examination of the top misconceptions propagated by many wargaming rules. Color charts and diagrams help
show why assumptions about British firepower, effectiveness of artillery, perceptions of various nationalities, unrealistically slow movement rates, column versus line, unit battle-
field endurance, etc., are faulty. Every attendee of this seminar will receive a gift. Game Demonstration follows in same room.

SM21201 Principles of war as applied to wargame design Speaker: Don Perrin Sat 12:00:00 PM

Description: CONQUEST WAR COLLEGE - A discussion by Mr. Norman E. Harms on the impact of a single motion picture on perceived military history. Hollywood and the mass
media, in general, have shaped our thoughts and understanding of history. The presentation of history by way of motion pictures and television is not necessarily a history lesson
along academic lines. The true and usually boring facts are not always presented in a manner to effectively provide the understanding of a given historical event.

SM22101 Discussion on Wargame Design- UNIT COHESION Speaker: Tom Dye Sat 9:00:00 PM
Description: CONQUEST WAR COLLEGE - Unit Cohesion and its real world workings are the topic for this discussion. Applicable to any period of history, we will take a look at
what this concept is, how we can model it on the table, how it can be modified to account for the effects of good or bad logistical support and how all this can be accomplished in a
manner that actually decreases game complexity!

Description: CONQUEST WAR COLLEGE - Famous, decisive World War II battles such as El Alamein, Kursk, etc., have been the subject of numerous books and even movies.
Less well-known but equally critical decisions and events also took place that had significant impact on the course of the war. Dana Lombardy presents a seminar offering a selec-
tion of these "secret" turning points that led to strategic advantages or fatal errors. This will be a fun event where the audience can participate by suggesting their favorite "secret"
turning points in the Q&A portion of the talk.

Welcome to a new page in Conquest Historical Miniatures!

There should be something for everyone and then some. With over sixty miniature events to choose from, this is a record number of games. Thanks to all the dedicated miniature
gamers that are hosting games. Without your efforts we would not be the great miniature venue that we are.
We are going to try something different this time. We are going to put out the sign up sheets for all games on Friday so you can sign up at any time. The only thing we ask of you is
that if you decide to not play in the game you take your name off the list so others that want to play can get in the game. If the game is full you may always sign up as an alternate
in the hopes someone bows out or the GM will allow additional players.
Although all of the games will be great fun, some just have that extra WOW factor. The GM’s are knowledgeable, the miniatures are exquisite, they battlefield is a work of art itself
and the games are just that much more fun. This list is not all inclusive, but includes the ones that have a tradition of excellence.

Saturday: Battle of Portland by Thomas Foss
          Aerodrome by Stan Kubiak
That’s a Big Hill by Terry Matheny, Harry Wolmelsdorf and John Ruys
Tarzan and the Queen of the Amazons by John Sullins
This Town Ain’t Big Enough… by Darrell Empey
Sunday: Circus Maximus by Bob Orr and Stuart Landon
The Seven Samurai by David Love
Movin’ Cattle and Shootin’ Varmints by Gary Price
          Aerodrome II by Stan Kubiak
It Looks Like a Painting by Terry Matheny, Harry Wolmelsdorf and John Ruys
Monday: Streets of Stalingrad by Roger Mark

I would also like to point out that we have a number of miniature dealers here this time, some that have come a long way. I encourage you to patronize their booths and make their
trip out here a profitable one so they and others may come next year.
Lastly, if you have any problems, complaints, needs or kudos, I am always available and will do my best to ensure you have a good time at Conquest SF.

Thank you,

David Partak, Historical Miniatures Coordinator

(Editor’s Note: We would like to thank Mr. Partak, who, while home between tours in the desert, he has chosen to spend some of his precious time
working with us this year. It’s a debt we can never repay, and we recognize his selfless service to all of us.)

Game Description: Indians vs. Achaemenid Persians using Armati 2nd Ed. This is a 75 point beginner oriented game that is open to experienced players. I plan on running two
games back to back for a total of four hours of play, more if the players are interested or willing. The contrast between the two armies should make for interesting play. The Indians
have lots of cheap infantry, chariots and elephants. The Persians have a pike phalanx, lots of skirmishers and even the possibility of scythed chariot!

Game Description: The Confederate River Defense fleet composed of eight wooden rams was not truly part of the Confederate navy. These cap-
tains were "mustangs", ex-river pilots and captains, used to acting alone. They bloodied the Union's nose at Plum Point but, facing the advancing
ironclads they would need more than surprise. This time the Union brought their own version of "mustangs" to the party.

Game Description: In the Spring of 1812, Viscount Wellesley was operating with a force of less than 23,000 men in the Spanish Province of Salamanca. His army had been seri-
ously weakened by detachments. Beresford was operating on the southern border of Portugal, entertaining Marshal Soult's army, while a force under Murray, supported by a
Spanish army, invaded Valencia as a diversion. Two weak Spanish divisions under Espana were within a few days march, but spread along the army's lines of communications.
An additional two divisions, the Guard and the Seventh, plus two cavalry brigades, were on the march from Lisbon, and notdue for several weeks. Meanwhile, Marshal Marmont,
after replacing Massena, had spent much of the winter of 1811/1812 rconstituting the French Army of Portugal, until forced into the field by Welleley's maneuvers. Due to other
threats, Marmont had previously dispatched Reille's corps to assist Soult, and divisions from both I and II corps to aid Dorsenne against the guerillas in northern Spain. Victor's
corps had also been detached for independant operations, but was now hustling to rejoin Marmont. This left the Army of Portugal with an immediate strength of less than 27,000
men, a slight numerical superiority over the British/Portuguese forces immediatley under Wellesley's command.

ConQuest is pleased to host a wide variety of boardgames this Labor Day weekend. The mix this year runs the gamut from classic favorites to the latest imports, from "beer and
pretzel" games to the more serious tactical games. We hope that this year's selection of board game events fills all of your gaming needs. Unless otherwise specified,
ConQuest Board Game events will take place in the Junior Ballroom.
Sign up for your favorite board game tournament at the ConQuest Boardgames Registration Desk located In the Junior ballroom. All board game events and premiere tourna-
ments will be of the single-elimination type unless otherwise specified.
An Event Host will adjudicate event rounds that are not completed in the specified time. Event Host rulings on game winners, rules, and scenarios are final.
A Special Reminder to Boardgame Players and Game Masters: Please remember to bring a copy of the games you wish to participate in, if possible, so we have enough. Feel
free to try games you don't know how to play. Just hook up with the GM. Most Gms are available before the start of play!

Game Description: Learn to tap the depths of your conniving and unscrupulous side, to boldly make promises you don't mean to keep to make
sure you're left standing at the end. For your backstabbing pleasure, two evil little gems.
The first game is Rette Sich Wer Kann ("Every Man for Himself"), and involves a little ocean catastrophe- the ship goes down and you’re left to
row for some nearby islands in leaky lifeboats… Who will you keep and who will you toss to the sharks? This is a game of democracy, negotiation,
and treachery- everything good about a negotiating game!
The second game de jour is Intrige. Intrige has a reputation: a bad one, but not from a playability stand point. It's a pure negotiating game pitting
the players against each other as Renaissance-era families engaging in rampant nepotism. We're talking nasty here. No, not just nasty ... cut-
throat in the vilest sense of the word. It is a virtual guarantee that you will screw ... and be screwed by ... EVERY player during the course of this
game.
This tournament will be two rounds, first Intrige and then Rette Sich Wer Kann. Points will be earned for each game with total points revealing
the true Machiavelli who will get the prize.

Game Description: Age of the Dragon Tears is in final testing before production. Players are dragons involved in an aerial brawl over control of
several Dragon Tear stones that have been sensed in a desert mesa area. This game set is our "giant sized" test version with a play board feet
across rather than a normal sized game. Swoop between the mesa towers and out maneuver or out fight the opposing Dragon clutch and win the
prizes for your dragonkin. Game time will not be two hours so we'll fit in as many sessions as we can.

Game Description: This is a great new (at least to me) game that I think will be really popular. You run a power company which pays for power
plants and the resources needed to fuel them. You also pay for connection costs from cities you serve to new cities. This game is pretty easy to
learn and the play is quick and interesting throughout. Bidding for the plants is reminiscent of Outpost and the city connections are much like train
games. The market for resources uses a very clever and effective mechanism. I plan to play with 2-5 more players. For every additional copy that
shows up, we can take 6 more players.

Game Description: An age of twilight shall once more spread across the galaxy.... In 2005, a Twilight Imperium will rise again. And at last, it's
here! The new "Axis and Allies" plus "Master of Orion' is back with a bang! Twilight Imperium 3 features a dynamic turn-based system which keeps
all players constantly on the edge of their seats! Literally, people stand up when playing this! New technologies and the 2 new war units (Destroyer
and War Sun) give players a variety of fleet strategies. Compared to Twilight Imperium 2, bookkeeping is reduced to a minimum which keeps the
game continually going. Race attributes and technologies are more balanced and provide the possibility for any player to achieve victory! This
game can accommodate 6 players and generally lasts 4-8 hours, depending on the strategy of the players! The game will be played with the stan-
dard rules and technology as well as all optional rules: (leaders, distant suns, probing, etc.) Only 1 house rule will be played in which the Initiative
Strategy Tile trumps the Naalu Collective's intrinsic initiative ability. May the best warrior/politician/merchant/technologist win!

and collecting specimens of wildlife. The game lasts 18 turns. In each turn, players determine income, build a hut (research station) and collect a
specimen. At the end of the game, the player score their collections and the player with the most points wins! Money is tight and a player must
collect three of a specimen type (of the five available) to score any points at all! Collecting one of each specimen type is rewarded with bonus
points. The game plays quickly and tension rises as the "good" locations are quickly occupied, forcing players to build (buy) huts in more expen-
sive locations in order to collect the needed specimens.

Game Description: Who needs to be the apprentice when you can be the Donald? All you need to do is drop that skyscraper in downtown Me-
tropolis and watch the fame and fortune roll in! One of venerable game designer Sid Sackson's greatest contributions to the negotiation genre, this
game has players trying to construct the best buildings in a rapidly growing city. The map is a collection of city blocks broken into smaller lots. Each
turn, players choose one lot to add to their collection of property. When a player has properties connected in the right pattern, they can erect a
building from the inventory of available buildings. If a lot or two is in the control of another player, then the players can try to work out deal for plac-
ing the new building on the board by combining their lots. The placement of a building is also very important because the value of each building is
determined by its location and also by the type of buildings in the same block. A game of planning, wheeling and dealing, and a bit of luck.

Game Description: No, Leonardo wasn’t the King of the World, but maybe you can be! From the designers of Cosmic Encounter, a great but very
hard-to-find classic. Trying to squeeze Diplomacy into a reasonable amount of time, Borderlands was designed to be a game where political wran-
gling is a must and a free market society fuels the ambition for conquest. Borderlands blends the conflict and deal making elements from Diplo-
macy with the resource management of Settlers of Catan. Little or no luck. Lots of player interaction. A tremendous amount of tactical and strategic
decision-making. With the trading and alliance rules, players stay involved even when it isn't their turn. To win, you’ll have to be good at a little bit
of everything…

                  Role Playing Games
Roleplaying enables you to go to any fantastic world imaginable. Whether you prefer the call of an endless frontier, the hard-wired thrills of cyberspace, the horror of ancient de-
mons, or the swashbuckling action of mythical times, ConQuest's extraordinary RPG and RPGA event lineup has something for you! ConQuest extends a special thanks to the
many RPG and RPGA Game Masters who have offered their time and enthusiasm to host the RPG events described in the following pages.
How to Sign Up For an RPG Event
ConQuest 2004 is using event registration for RPGs. We cannot absolutely guarantee that you will get into every RPG event you've signed up for. If you do not get into an event
you want, show up for it anyway, as there may be an opening. This possibility is entirely up to the individual GM and the other players assigned to the event. Follow the steps
outlined below to successfully register for an RPG event at ConQuest:
1. Read the RPG event descriptions carefully for the signup session, time, and room location of the event.
2. Come to the RPG Registration Table near the Convention Registration Desk to sign up for the RPG event at the proper session time as listed in the table below. Before you
sign up for a particular session, check for any signs at the RPG Registration Table that may indicate that an event has been cancelled.
4. Do not sign up for non-RPG events using the RPG event registration process. Do not sign up for RPGA events using the RPG event registration process.
5. Use the official signup form available at the RPG Registration Table. Legibly print your badge number, your name, and the event numbers of the RPG events you want to
enter. Place the completed form in the RPG Event Signup Box at the RPG Registration Table.
6. Do not submit more than one signup form per session.
7. List each RPG event only once on a signup form. If you don't get your event as your first choice, you certainly won't get it as your second choice.
8. RPG Event Player Assignments will be posted on a wall near the Convention Registration Desk at least 30 minutes before the beginning of the session. If you didn't get
into an event, check the Event Player Assignment List for an RPG Event that didn't fill up and show up for it.
9. Problems? Concerns? Frustrations? Come to the Convention Registration Desk and ask to speak with or leave a message for Gerald Rouse, Director of RPGs, or Kevin
O’Hare, Director of Programming. This is especially true for those of you who can't seem to get into any RPG events during the weekend.

                                                        Live Action Role Playing (LARP)
Live Action Role Playing allows players to stand up and speak their parts, to role-play with gestures and movement, props and costumes. LARPs tend to be slightly larger than
traditional RPGs, and place more of the storytelling burden on the players’ shoulders. Players obtain a greater degree of freedom, often roaming about the play area and interact-
ing primarily with other players rather than through a moderator or Game Master. However, with greater freedom comes greater responsibility, as players must be more vigilant
about the rules and codes of conduct they use when they play. All LARPS take place in the Santa Clara room.
                                                                                LARP Registration
Large LARPs are often able to admit everyone who shows up on time. However, those who register for a LARP via the RPG registration system will receive first priority if they are
on time. Simply enter the LARP event number on the registration slip, during the appropriate registration period.

We are especially proud to host many events especially designed for our newer generations of gamers. Kids of all ages are invited to the San Ramon Room near the Convention
Registration Desk to check out the wide variety of scheduled kids events hosted by Roleplay Workshop and Game Masters interested in introducing our next generation of "kids" to
the fun and excitement of gaming. If you've attended KublaCon and Origins, you'll certainly recognize Randy Kreidt, in his jester's cap, hosting special games especially for kids.
Roleplay Workshop: Roleplay Workshop will introduce young people age 8 and over to a wide variety of easy-to-learn tabletop, card, and role playing games. Come visit Becky
Thomas and the Kids Room staff in the San Ramon Room to learn more about what the Roleplay Workshop has to offer for the young and the young at heart.
Safety and Liability: The ConQuest Kids Room is not a day care center! We are not prepared to supervise children under the age of eight. In the interests of promoting safe and
responsible youth gaming, ConQuest has the following policies in effect for the Kids Room. Parents intending to drop off young players eight and older at the ConQuest Kids Room
must first check in with the Roleplay Workshop staff in the San Ramon Room and fill out a standard emergency card. This card provides us with information to allow us to contact a
parent or supervising adult in case of an emergency with a young gamer, and to authorize medical treatment in the event of an emergency where we are unable to locate or con-
tact a parent. The Roleplay Workshop and ConQuest assume no liability or responsibility for young gamers who check into youth games hosted in the Kids Room without a parent
or other supervising adult to complete the emergency information card.
