Thank you for your interest in a position at North Durham Academy.
North Durham Academy opened in September 2011, on the sites of the former Greencroft
Business and Enterprise Community School and Stanley School of Technology. In September
2013 the Academy will move onto a new purpose built campus in the heart of Stanley, offering
unrivalled new facilities for our students and the Stanley community.
The Academy lead sponsor is New College Durham and we are co-sponsored by Durham
County Council, both are award winning providers of outstanding education in our region.
North Durham Academy will be an outstanding school for the 21st century, based on three core
Inclusion: We are committed to every student and seek to realise each child’s potential, ability
Progression: We will encourage and support all students, offering effective guidance and
Excellence: The focus on excellence will underpin all our activities and expectations as an
These ambitious objectives require an exceptional Learning Leader for the development of the
Nurture Group provision in KS3/4. In September 2011 the Academy introduced the concept of
creating 3 groups at KS3 ( 1 each in Y7,8,&9) known as ‘Nurture Groups’. There are
approximately 15 to 20 students in each group and they are taught predominantly by a single
teacher in a dedicated suite of teaching spaces. The post holder will have teaching
responsibilities for one of the Nurture Groups at KS3 with an allowance made in their timetable
for management time. The students are identified from KS2/3 data as requiring additional
support, particularly in the core competencies of literacy & numeracy. A bespoke ‘Nurture
Group’ integrated curriculum has been developed this year using a competency based model.
The RSA ‘Opening Minds’ scheme has influenced the basis of that model. The Academy would
like to develop the curriculum further and possibly extend the provision to KS4.
The post holder will have a sound knowledge of effective literacy, numeracy and basic skills
programmes and a keen interest in developing a bespoke curriculum which best suites the
needs of the students. The successful candidate will be able to ‘Think outside the box’, be
creative, innovative and flexible in their approach to developing the provision further.
Applications from primary trained colleagues would be welcome and/or from colleagues who
have worked in a similar provision in a secondary school setting.
The post holder will lead on standards and student outcomes within the Nurture Groups at KS3
and develop and sustain high quality teaching and learning throughout, ensuring that the
curriculum offer meets the needs of the students.
The agenda is challenging but exciting. This is a real opportunity to be creative and escape from
the straight jacket of the National Curriculum and produce a dynamic, exciting learning
experience well suited to the needs of a particular group of our students. For the right person
this presents an unrivalled opportunity to make a real difference and a lasting contribution to the
success of our Academy.

provision prior to application please contact us to arrange a visit.
