History of FERA
• Originally the ERA started by Hoover
• ERA gave loans to states to operate relief
pumps-every state had one. -New York had
• Result of FERA
• Later changed to WPA
• Set up in 1933
• Led by Harry Hopkins, an important advisor to
Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt.
• Roosevelt asked for FERA so as to give the
states funds for the same emergency purpose
• Choose trusted advisor Harry Hopkins to lead
FERA along with the CCC
• To create jobs
• Raised self-esteem
• To relieve household unemployment
Because of an oncoming dreaded winter in 33-34, they spent 400
million on the CWA.
• Still high unemployment
• Not-so-great public welfare
Led to the termination of FERA.
FERA was soon replaceed by the WPA and the

It wasn't a complete fail-20 million people got

total of 3.1 billion dollars between when it
started, (May 1933) and when it ended,
(December 1935) and there was still high
