Title: Jamberry
Author: Bruce Degen
Illustrator: Bruce Degen
Suggested Grade Level: First Grade
Strategy: Rhyming Words and Vocabulary
Submitted by: First Grade
School: Carver Elementary School

Planning This is a fun, fictional book that contains rhythm. There are
several rhyming words used. Jamberry also contains complex
vocabulary. (Illustrations are also linked to many of the
                         vocabulary words.)

Before Reading: Have the class complete a word web around the word berry,
Prepare coming up with as many different types of berries and
characteristics of those berries as possible. Lead the class in
a discussion about their favorite kind of berry. Have students
talk about any experiences that they have with picking berries.

Reading Focus: Review rhyming words and tell students to
listen for rhyming words throughout the book.

Make a vocabulary chart for the words: canoe, meadow,
                         bridge and dam.
Have students predict what each word means. Write students
                         predictions the chart.
Tell students to listen for the vocabulary words as you read
(perhaps snapping their fingers when they hear a vocabulary
word), and to try to use the story and the pictures to help them
                         check their predictions.

During Reading: Stop reading periodically and allow students to identify the
Guide rhyming words in the story. Give the students a word from the
story, and allow them to come up with their own rhyming
word. When the students identify a rhyming word in the story,
stop and use the pictures and the story to figure out the
meaning of the word. Go back and compare the meaning of
the word to the student’s predictions before reading the book.

After Reading: Extend Have students taste different types of berries (blueberries,
strawberries, raspberries, blackberries etc). Have small
groups of students make their own word web around their
type of berry using describing words.

Have students write their own make believe “berry hunting”
                    adventure.

Have students list the rhyming words from their paper as you
                    reread the book.

Vocabulary Lesson Have students choose one of the vocabulary words and
complete a four-square vocabulary activity on their chosen
word (write the word, write the meaning, use the word in a
                    sentence and draw a picture).
