Teaching – learning process

(a) THEORY SUBJECT

Dr. Pauls Engineering College is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The academic calendar for
entire academic session, giving details of various schedules like for class room teaching, completion
of laboratory work, sessional examinations, internal viva-voce for laboratory work, viva-voce / test
for absentees in sessional examinations, etc., is notified and displayed at the beginning of the
session.

The scheme for academic calendar adopted by the department is based on the guidelines provided
by the Anna University, Chennai. As per university ordinance, teaching session for each semester
should be of 13 weeks. Moreover as per University syllabus, the course should be completed within
45 – 52 periods. Based on these guidelines, we make our academic calendar for each semester. The
number of contact hours per week for theory classes, laboratory sessions, tutorials, project
supervision and counseling is prepared based on university’s scheme.
The board of studies in respective branch of engineering of Anna University, Chennai reviews the
syllabus on regular basis, according to suggestions received from subject teachers and the latest
technological advancement in the subject area. Change in syllabus by the university is permitted as
when required. The recent major change in syllabus was due to the change in pattern of course
from semester to annual in first year B.E./B.Tech only.

Attendance records for theory and laboratory work are maintained and students having inadequate
attendance are informed. Similarly, subject-wise results of final university examinations are
analyzed after the commencement of results. The Head of the Department conveys the subject-wise
result analysis and student’s feedback to the principal.

(b) LABORATORY WORK

The laboratory work is consistent with acquired theoretical background. The laboratory
experiments are based on the theory syllabus of the subject. The purpose of performance of
laboratory experiments is (i) to confirm the theory taught, and (ii) to demonstrate application of
already illustrated theory.

(c) PROJECT WORK AND SEMINARS

As per the Anna University scheme, a project batch shall have maximum 5 students. It is suggested
to have a subgroup of 4 – 5 students for each project. The respective head of the department should
do allotment of project.

EVALUATION METHODOLOGY

(a) THEORY SUBJECT

The evaluation procedure adopted by each department should be along the guidelines provided by
the Anna University. Typically theory subject has internal assessment component of 20 marks and
university examination has 80 marks. The teachers evaluate the students judiciously on the basis of
student’s regularity and performance in the class tests and viva-voce. Attendance records for theory
and practical (laboratory work) are maintained and students having inadequate attendance are
informed. Separate weightage in sessional marks is given for regular interaction with teachers for
which regularity in attendance is a parameter. For all classes, class tests for a total of 15 marks are
conducted. They are conducted by fixing special time table during the regular working days for all
the subjects. Marks for class tests are displayed. The students are shown their answer books in
order to ensure that students identify their mistakes and find what corrective measures they should
take to improve their performance in final examination. Any grievance in this regard is redressed
by an individual teacher. Viva-voce for theory is conducted at the end of the term. Distribution of
internal marks for theory is given in Table 1.

(b) LABORATORY WORK

The practical subject has internal assessment components of 25 marks and university examination
has remaining 25 marks. The teachers evaluate the students on the basis of student’s performance
in the laboratory, regularity, journal record and final viva-voce at the end of the term. Student’s
attendance record for laboratory work is maintained and separate weightage in sessional marks is
given for regularity in attendance. Distribution of internal marks for laboratory works is given in
Table 2.

Regarding project work, the students work under the guidance of teachers (guide) allotted to them.
The guides continuously monitor the performance of the students. The guide does the internal
assessment, as per success rate of the project based on the work done, understanding of the topic,
and the demonstration.

In addition, student is required to prepare and deliver a seminar. The students are asked to deliver
their seminars before the staff, students and an evaluation committee comprising of guide and two
subject experts. The committee evaluates the students as per subject matter, understanding of the
topic and the delivery. The format of evaluation report for seminar is shown in Table 4.
