                                Membership Renewals

We are at that time of year again when many of our members will be renewing their membership.
However, there are some who, for whatever reason, have not yet renewed and, if they have not
done so by 31 March, will be shown as lapsed. I would, therefore ask all Branch or/and
Membership Secretaries to ensure someone makes personal contact with those individuals who
have not yet renewed and encourage them to do so. Last year the Area had over 900 lapsed
members. Although CHQ will issue a letter to such individuals during May it may well be that in
some cases there is an underlying welfare reason as to why an individual has not yet renewed and
which the Branch is unaware of.

                          Branch & Branch Club Accounts
Branches are reminded that in accordance with Standard Branch Regulation (BR32), Accounts as
at 31st December 2011, including a Report from the Auditor or Independent Examiner, for both
Branch and Branch Clubs are to be received at Area Offices by 31st March 2012.

Your attention is also drawn to Byelaw 24(1) b, which states that a Branch shall be entitled to be
represented at a Conference of the Association, providing that its audited Accounts for the
preceding year have been submitted to the Area Headquarters, not less than 10 days before the
first day of Conference.

                                     Form 1056 & 1056A

Branch and Branch Club Secretaries are reminded that the Form 1056 (Branch) and 1056A (Branch
Club) should be returned as soon as possible, following their Annual General Meeting. An early
return of these Forms ensures that the correspondence goes to the correct addressee, rather than
annoying or embarrassing those that have given up their Committee appointments. I thank those
Secretaries that have already submitted their Forms.

                                         New Website
The revamped RAF Association website will be going live on Thursday 1 st March. I would
encourage all those with internet access to visit www.rafa.org.uk to have a look. This is the first
stage in a continuous development process for our website.

                        Branch Standards At Annual Conference
The number of Standards being paraded at Conference is sadly diminishing and one of our friends
from Wales who is a regular attendee at Conference has suggested Cadets from the local ATC
Squadron might be willing to parade a Branch Standard if its own Standard Bearer is unable to
attend. The local Squadron would be delighted to help so if any Branch wishes to make use of this
facility please contact the Conference Organiser, Margaret Duff – Margaret.duff@rafa.org.uk tel
01772 600211, RAFA Conference PO Box 316, Leyland PR25 9AX before the end of April.

Jointly Branded Collecting Tins To Hit RAF Stations.
We are pleased to announce a new fundraising initiative between the RAF Association and the RAF
Benevolent Fund. From 1st March 2012, static collecting tins branded with both charities logos will
begin to appear on RAF Stations replacing the current tins of both charities. These tins will be run
in cooperation between our RAFALO’s and RAFBF Area representatives with the monies collected
being divided equally between the RAF Association and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

                                                 -3-
This initiative is designed to resolve the issue whereby collecting tins from individual RAF charities
compete for primacy on station. It is expected that the joint collecting tins will create a greater static
fundraising presence on RAF stations for both charities leading to more funds being donated. The

monies generated for the RAF Association from these tins will continue to be assigned to the
relevant Branches who have a close relationship with an RAF station. Furthermore, this scheme
will only be applied to RAF stations as this is primarily where the 2 charities find their current tins
are often competing for the same donations.

We look forward to working alongside the RAFBF on this initiative whilst boosting the RAF
Association’s presence on station.

Wings Appeal Fulfilment moves to RAFATRAD
As of 9th April 2012 all Wings Appeal fundraising equipment and merchandise will be orderable from
RAFATRAD. If you have any old Wings Appeal order forms with the address of our previous
provider – Fastant – then please do not use these from then on.

The 2012 Wings Appeal order form will be sent to all Branch Wings Appeal Organisers with their
Easter newsletter in early April and will contain the full postal details of where to send your order
forms. If you have an upcoming event before the 9th April then Fastant will still be processing all
orders up to the switch over.

If your Branch orders your Wings Appeal stock online then simply continue to log on to the RAF
Association website and after the switch over you will be directed to RAFATRAD’s website to place
your order.
St Dunstan’s – Change of Name

The following information has been received from St Dunstan’s:

Tuesday 21st February was a ‘red letter day’ in the ninety seven year history of St Dunstan’s, for it
was the day that we changed our name from St Dunstan's to Blind Veterans UK. This decision
follows a two year long review of our ‘Brand’ together with extensive research taking account of the
views of various focus groups, comprising St Dunstaners, staff, volunteers, existing donors and
potential donors.

All the indications are that our new image and style will increase awareness of what we do, help us
to attract more beneficiaries and raise more money. We know that there are still many blind and
severely visually impaired ex-Service men and women who would qualify for our lifelong support but
who aren’t aware that we exist for them.

We have been known as St Dunstan’s since soon after our founding, initially as The Blinded
Soldiers and Sailors Aftercare Fund during WW1, but we know that the name and the image no
longer helps us reach our full potential and be recognised by the younger supporters we need for
the future. In former years the name of St Dunstan’s was instantly recognised, but so often
nowadays when people hear the name St Dunstan’s, they think we are either a church or a school.

We remain proud of our heritage and we don’t want to confuse people who already know about us
and the work we do, so we will be accompanying the new name with ‘St Dunstan's since 1915’
wherever appropriate.
                                                   -4-
As a consequence of the name change as from today our website address will be
www.blindveterans.org.uk

Trying to locate the Veterans RAF St Eval for Reunion

The RAF St Eval Friends Reunited Association 1939/1959 is trying to contact all ex-RAF St Eval
personnel and invite them to our next reunion, which will be held at the Trebarwith Hotel in
Newquay in September.

All members receive two newsletters each year and we can also do a search for your ex St Eval
pals.

RAF St Eval (Cornwall) airfield opened in 1939 and closed in March 1959. It was one of the largest
coastal command stations in the country, which was situated about seven miles from Newquay.

So that the airfield could be built a small Cornish hamlet consisting of seven cottages and the public
house, the Spry Arms, which was situated where the main runway was to be built, were

                                                  -5-
demolished. It was strongly rumoured that the Norman church which was located on the periphery of
the airfield was to be demolished as well. But it survived to become the centre-piece of the station
badge, authorised by King George VI in October 1949.

Over 1,000 personnel lost their lives while serving at RAF St Eval. In the churchyard there is a
poignant reminder of the past, where many brave RAF St Eval personnel are buried.

For more information about the reunion plans, or if you know someone who was at the base who
would be interested in the reunion, call Peter on 01271 814 439, Bob on 01303 892 559 or David on
