10K Route; Declared multi-terrain the accuracy of the course is considered to be exactly 10k.
From the newly improved 5,000 capacity Football Stadium, off Partridge Way Old Sarum, the route (75%
on Road or Pavement) turns right onto the Portway (one of 5 Roman Roads that lead to Old Sarum
Castle) to gain the A345 at the Beehive (adjacent to the Cities Northern Park & Ride). Continuing West
along Phillips Lane, skirting the northern embankments of Old Sarum Hill Fort and just after 2k, the route
dips down the inclined path (straight ahead) to Stratford Sub Castle and the picturesque Village Church.
Turning left, towards the City, the route will now wind through Stratford Sub Castle, passing quaint
thatched cottages and the house of a former Prime Minister. Turning once again left, (Eastward) onto
the Portway, runners will take the old Roman Pathway, which leaves the Road at Hudson’s Field and
climbs steadily to the Eastern entrance and earthworks of the Iron Age (500BC) Hill Fort. Runners will
now gain to their left, the outer ‘Ring’ to do a complete 360’ of this English Heritage site, once occupied
by the Romans, Saxons and Normans.
With fine panoramic views over the surrounding countryside, the Avon Valley and the City of New Sarum
(Salisbury) there will wonderful sights of the magnificent 750-year-old Salisbury Cathedral, with its 404’
highest Spire in England.
After runners complete, clockwise the one-mile Ring, the route returns down a small lane to the A345
Amesbury & Stonehenge road, crossing safely at the Harvester Old Castle Inn. Cut ahead onto the Old
Castle Road, the 10k route now bends left, till taking turning on right and away from Old Sarum towards
the Village of Ford, running along another Roman Road, skirting the First World War Airfield of Old
Sarum. After 1.5k and as the road starts to descend into the Village, runners will turn left onto Green
Lane and then follow the Airfield Road past the old Rifle Ranges and end of the busy Runway. Turning
left after Ottons, in the Old Sarum Business Park, runners now return along the ‘Portway’ to Partridge
Way for a fine Raymond McEnhill, Stadium Finish.
