                                            Gartner’s Predictions for 2012 Gets Rolled!


                                            Well it’s that time of year again where everyone and their
                                            mother, predicts what the heck is in store for IT in the New
                                            Year. One of the more persistent players is Gartner; however,
                                            Gartner is conservative with regards to their 30,000 foot view,
                                            so here at Wasabi Roll, we thought we would review a few of
                                            their predictions and share our take on these pontifications with
                                            a more grounded perspective..


                                            Gartner: A Maturing Competitive Landscape Brings New
                                            IAM Opportunities; 28 November 2011
Many enterprises are considering new identity and access management vendors, as well as
new delivery and pricing models. Innovative approaches bring opportunities for cost savings and
program improvements; however, they also carry risks.


Wasabi:     Really?    You don’t say, perhaps Managed Federation of two factor
authentication, so 5 years ago… Too easy, too vague


Gartner: Achieving a Business Focus on Sustainability, Energy, Performance and
Technology; 18 November 2011
The practical realities of how enterprises are implementing sustainable business practices are
evolving rapidly, resulting in changes to organizational governance, processes and the nature of
sustainable business system solutions.
Wasabi: What? Blah, blah, blah, this sentence could be said every year – pol-IT-ic-speak


Gartner: Application Integration Will Increase in Scope and Complexity; 10 November
2011
As organizations' application portfolios become ever more diversified and distributed,
corresponding integration projects will also increase in scope and complexity. We predict how
companies will address some emerging integration challenges during the next few years.
Wasabi: What? Were we to assume that there was even the remote possibility that
Integration would decrease in Scope and Complexity? Way to step out there Gartner!

Gartner: Business Continuity Management Maturity Takes Two Steps Forward and One
Step Back Due to Technology and Cultural Changes; 28 November 2011
Supply chain availability requirements and the goal for better business agility and resilience will
continue to be the key drivers for improved BCM and IT disaster recovery modernization. BCM
integration with the enterprise risk management function will support these two organizational
objectives.
Wasabi: Well I don’t know about your s      ources, but most of our clients think the key
drivers for improved BCM and IT disaster recovery is cost and the new enabler’s that
made it a no brainer, i.e., Virtualization and the Cloud. Not sure we agree on the step
back though, for the game just got a little easier with the advent of the Cloud.


Gartner: Cloud Computing and Event Processing Will Be the Key Advances in
Application Architecture; 16 November 2011
Most new cloud applications will use service-oriented architecture design principles and in-
memory computing, and new business applications will leverage event processing and SOA
gateways. However, few applications will be modified for cloud deployment, mobility support or
IMC.

Gartner: Cloud Services Brokerage Will Bring New Benefits and Planning Challenges; 22
November 2011
As the market for cloud services brokerage offerings continues to expand, end-user companies
and cloud services providers will need help strategizing their use. CSBs will make governance
in the cloud the most common way of consuming governance functionality.

Gartner: Context-Aware Computing Changes Consumer-Facing and Security Strategies;
23 November 2011
Adoption of context-aware computing is accelerating. IT cannot afford to wait to respond in the
areas of consumer-facing strategies, security and fraud prevention.
Wasabi: Wow, this one was revolutionary… I hope you folks aren’t paying for this stuff.

Wasabi: Well this one is almost right – this is what I was talking about with the new types
of touch point technology out there… see my earlier blog The Most Underutilized
Resource in Your Company. But the drive to reduce cost doesn’t have to undermine the
customer trust, if done right, it can encourage customer trust.


Gartner: Data Management at a Tipping Point; 28 November 2011
Our 2012 predictions regarding data management technologies describe how organizations and
providers will need to meet the challenges created by the explosion of information, and new
business demands, in an environment where both resources and budgets are constrained.
Wasabi: Data Management at a Tipping Point? Hardly, with these new vehicles such as
Cloud, Virtualization, SANware, IT houses don’t know what to do with all the new
storage…


Gartner: Emerging Suites and SaaS Are Driving New Capabilities in Administrative ERP;
16 November 2011
Mergers and acquisitions are creating broader application suites, while new technologies and
delivery models, such as social and software as a service, continue to drive innovation in
administrative ERP applications.
Wasabi: obvious – publish or perish ERP…

Cloud computing and mobile devices hold the potential to make enterprises more agile, more
