An Alternate Ending to John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men
Due: March 24th (Red) --- March 25th (White)
As readers, many of you were disappointed and frustrated with the ending of John
Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, feeling that there were many other solutions to the problems
of the characters. You are not alone. Thousands of other readers have also pleaded the
same case. Well now, you have your chance to re-write the ending and give Lennie and
George the resolutions you feel they deserve.
For this assignment, you are to rewrite the ending to the novel. However, you must fulfill
the following requirements.
Requirements for alternate ending:
--The story must end in a manner that: does not have George killing Lennie, is believable to
a previous reader who has knowledge of the original ending and demonstrates an
understanding of the plot and its characters.
--The “voice” and style in the writing needs to follow the existing fictional text form to
match the rest of the story. This is so that the transition from one author to the next will be
as seamless as possible.
--Quality writing standards, including correct conventions, the correct use of dialogue and
complex sentence structure need to be applied to the new ending.
--The writing must be typed, double-spaced, 12 size font, using standard margins and
formatting. Length: 2-5 pages
