Awareness Week.

  This measure would designated the week of June 3, 2007, through
June 10, 2007, as Mesothelioma Awareness Week to raise awareness
about the symptoms of, and ways of preventing and treating
  Fiscal committee: no.

 1     WHEREAS, Exposure to asbestos can cause malignant tumor
 2   growth resulting in a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma as
 3   well as diffuse pleural thickening of the lung tissue and fibrosis
 4   causing lung cancer; and
 5     WHEREAS, Workers in the building and construction trades,
 6   shipping industry workers, firefighters, and military personnel are
 7   heavily impacted by exposure to asbestos; and

 1      WHEREAS, There are three types of malignant mesothelioma,
 2   including: (1) pleural mesothelioma, which accounts for 75 percent
 3   of mesothelioma cases and starts in the chest cavity, (2) peritoneal
 4   mesothelioma, which accounts for about 10 to 20 percent of
 5   mesothelioma cases and starts in the abdomen, and (3) pericardial
 6   mesothelioma, which is rare and starts in the heart; and
 7      WHEREAS, Each year more than 3,000 Americans are
 8   diagnosed with mesothelioma caused by exposure to toxic asbestos;
 9   and
10      WHEREAS, Asbestos is a naturally occurring fiber, and has
11   been used mostly for commercial and industrial purposes, including
12   drywall and insulation materials; and
13      WHEREAS, Asbestos has been used in older plastics, paper
14   products and floor tiles, thus giving the greatest exposure to those
15   individuals working with those products, or living near
16   manufacturing plants of those products; and
17      WHEREAS, The survival rate from the onset of mesothelioma
18   symptoms generally ranges from 4 to 12 months; and
19      WHEREAS, The average age of mesothelioma diagnosis ranges
20   from 50 to 70 years of age; and
21      WHEREAS, Symptoms of mesothelioma include, among other
22   things, a cough that does not go away persistent cough, recurring
23   infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, shortness of breath,
24   bone pain, jaundice (yellow coloring of the skin and eyes), and
25   chest pain, which is often aggravated by deep breathing; and
26      WHEREAS, New treatments for mesothelioma have been able
27   to increase the life expectancy of patients by using methods such
28   as gene therapy, immunotherapy, intensity modulated radiation
29   therapy (IMRT) as well as new chemotherapy agents; now,
30   therefore, be it
31      Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
32   thereof concurring, That the Legislature designate the week of
33   June 3, 2007, through June 10, 2007, as Mesothelioma Awareness
34   Week to raise awareness about the symptoms of, and ways of
35   preventing and treating mesothelioma; and be it further
36      Resolved,That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
37   of this resolution to the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of

2   author for appropriate distribution.
