      Commonly Confused Verbs:
         Accept and Except
     Acceptis a verb meaning “to receive” or
     “to agree with”
     Exceptis a preposition meaning “not
     including,” but it is sometimes a verb
     meaning “to leave out”

             Different Meanings

     Lookat the different meanings conveyed
     by accept and except in the following
     sentences:
       Good  Running hoped his wife would
        accept the boy.
       No one except Good Running knew
        where the boy had gone and for what
        purpose.
+                        Practice
     Write    the following sentences, choosing the
         correct word in parentheses:
    1.    Good Running’s wife asked if he would
          (accept, except) the moccasins.
    2.    Good Running (accepted, excepted) a ride.
    3.    None (accept, except) Long Arrow had ever
          returned from the lake.
    4.    The spirit chief looked normal (accept,
          except) for his leg and foot.
