If you have to miss one meal a day, which meal will cause you fewest health problems if you

However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast to be the most important meal
of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say, we will have the energy and nutrients(营养)we
need to begin our working day with vigor and hopefully in high spirits. Nevertheless, many people
skip breakfast or just have a donut(油炸圈饼)and a cup of coffee instead of a well-balanced meal.
What happens if we don’t care for the importance of breakfast?
One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people.
Participants(参与者)included both males and females who ranged in ages from 12 to 83. During
the experiment, these people were given a variety of breakfasts, and sometimes, they had to skip
breakfast completely. Special tests, including blood tests and endurance(耐力)tests, were set up to
see how well the participants’ bodies acted when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast.
The results showed that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work more
efficiently and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast.
This fact appears to be especially true if a person’s work relates to mental activity. The study
showed that if school children eat fruit, eggs, bread, and milk before going to school, they will
learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate(集中)on their lessons for a longer period of time
than if their breakfast diet is improper.
The study also showed that, opposite to what many people believe, if you skip breakfast, you
will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat
too much for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember, if you are on a diet,
skipping breakfast will not help you. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other

destructive(破坏性的)as the atomic bomb.

test of the bomb in New Mexico. Almost everybody was surprised to learn where the bomb had

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he is not

It is the story of someone who tries to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told
this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money
in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside
New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every
day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and
gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because any one was always trying to
keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new
way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with the
life-style(生活方式)of their rich neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a

city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter
what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

The next society will be a knowledge society. Knowledge will be its key resource. Its three

main characteristics will be as follows.
Borderlessness, because knowledge travels even more effortlessly than money.
Upward mobility, available to everyone through easily acquired formal education.
The potential(潜在的可能)for failure as well as success. Anyone can acquire the“means of
production”, but not everyone can win.
Together, those three characteristics will make the knowledge society a highly competitive
one. Information technology, although only one of many new features of the next society, is already
having one hugely important effect, allowing knowledge to spread near instantly, and makes it
accessible to everyone. Given the ease and speed at which information travels, every institution in
the knowledge society has to be globally competitive even though most organizations will continue
to be local in their activities and in their markets. This is because the Internet will keep customers
everywhere informed on what is available any where in the world and at what price.
This new knowledge economy will rely heavily on knowledge workers: doctors, lawyers,
teachers, accountants, chemical engineers. But the most striking growth will be in“knowledge
technologists.”These people are as much manual(体力的)workers as they are knowledge workers.
In fact, they usually spend far more time working with their hands than with their brains. But their
manual work is based on a considerable amount of theoretical knowledge which can be acquired
only through formal education, not through apprenticeship( 学 徒 ). They see themselves as
