If you have to miss one meal a day, which meal will cause you fewest health problems if you
don’t eat it? If they have to make a decision of this type, most people will choose to skip(遗
漏)breakfast.
However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast to be the most important meal
of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say, we will have the energy and nutrients(营养)we
need to begin our working day with vigor and hopefully in high spirits. Nevertheless, many people
skip breakfast or just have a donut(油炸圈饼)and a cup of coffee instead of a well-balanced meal.
What happens if we don’t care for the importance of breakfast?
One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people.
Participants(参与者)included both males and females who ranged in ages from 12 to 83. During
the experiment, these people were given a variety of breakfasts, and sometimes, they had to skip
breakfast completely. Special tests, including blood tests and endurance(耐力)tests, were set up to
see how well the participants’ bodies acted when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast.
The results showed that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work more
efficiently and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast.
This fact appears to be especially true if a person’s work relates to mental activity. The study
showed that if school children eat fruit, eggs, bread, and milk before going to school, they will
learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate(集中)on their lessons for a longer period of time
than if their breakfast diet is improper.
The study also showed that, opposite to what many people believe, if you skip breakfast, you
will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat
too much for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember, if you are on a diet,
skipping breakfast will not help you. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other
meals.

Before 1945, hardly anyone outside of New Mexico had ever heard of Alamogordo. In 1960
its population numbered 21723. Ever since 1898, when the town had been built by the Southern
Pacific Railroad, Alamogordo had been a lonely town. The land around it was largely desert and
largely empty.
Because it was isolated(被隔离的)and because the weather was almost always clear and
peaceful, a spot of desert near Alamogordo was chosen as the test site for the first atomic bomb
ever exploded. The secret name of the test was Zero.
At dawn on July 16,1945, the atomic bomb was set off. Observers agreed that they had
witnessed(见证)something unlike anything ever seen by man before: a huge, colorful fireball, more
brilliant than the sun, flashing as it rose for miles into the air. Never before had man released(释
放)so much power at one time, nor had any nation ever possessed a weapon as terrible and
destructive(破坏性的)as the atomic bomb.
For several weeks, the test was kept secret. When an atomic bomb was dropped from an
American plane on Hiroshima, Japan, newspapers and radio stations all over America told of the
test of the bomb in New Mexico. Almost everybody was surprised to learn where the bomb had
been made and tested; the desert of the Southwest had hidden the secret well.
When news of the atomic bomb and its destructiveness was announced, people all over the
world wondered what other new weapons were being prepared in the New Mexico desert. Some
even doubted the wisdom of using so powerful a weapon. But no one doubted that a new kind of
war had begun at Alamogordo, one summer morning in 1945.
60. What is the main topic of this passage?
      A. The secret of Alamogordo. B. A new kind of war.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he is not
very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what“Keeping up with the Joneses”is about.
It is the story of someone who tries to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told
this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money
in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside
New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every
day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and
gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because any one was always trying to
keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new
way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with the
life-style(生活方式)of their rich neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a

name in the United States.“Keeping up with the Joneses”came to mean keeping up with the
life-style of the rich people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across
the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with Joneses. And there are“Joneses”in every

The next society will be a knowledge society. Knowledge will be its key resource. Its three

                      高二英语期中卷共 8 页 6
main characteristics will be as follows.
Borderlessness, because knowledge travels even more effortlessly than money.
Upward mobility, available to everyone through easily acquired formal education.
The potential(潜在的可能)for failure as well as success. Anyone can acquire the“means of
production”, but not everyone can win.
Together, those three characteristics will make the knowledge society a highly competitive
one. Information technology, although only one of many new features of the next society, is already
having one hugely important effect, allowing knowledge to spread near instantly, and makes it
accessible to everyone. Given the ease and speed at which information travels, every institution in
the knowledge society has to be globally competitive even though most organizations will continue
to be local in their activities and in their markets. This is because the Internet will keep customers
everywhere informed on what is available any where in the world and at what price.
This new knowledge economy will rely heavily on knowledge workers: doctors, lawyers,
teachers, accountants, chemical engineers. But the most striking growth will be in“knowledge
technologists.”These people are as much manual(体力的)workers as they are knowledge workers.
In fact, they usually spend far more time working with their hands than with their brains. But their
manual work is based on a considerable amount of theoretical knowledge which can be acquired
only through formal education, not through apprenticeship( 学 徒 ). They see themselves as
professionals.
72. Which of the following groups of people are knowledge technologists?
   A. Computer technicians. B. Teachers. C. Lawyers. D. Doctors.
73. What is the best title for the passage?
  A. The Next Society. B. The knowledge Technologists.
  C. Knowledge Is All. D. The Knowledge Workers.
74. Which of the following statements is true?
