Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that does not affect humans but has devastating
effects on animals with cloven hooves such as cattle, swine, sheep, goats and deer. The virus can be killed by heat, low
humidity and some disinfectants. It has returned to Egypt, causing farmers to panic It is rarely fatal to animals but may kill
very young animals. There is no cure, and the virus usually runs its course in two to three weeks with most animals
recovering. The most obvious signs of the disease in animals are excessive slobbering, going off feed and lameness.
Affected animals may have a sudden rise in temperature, followed by blisters in the mouth or other areas of tender skin
such as utters in females, nostrils and on the feet particularly near the hooves. Soft tissues under the hoof are often
96
inflamed, and the animal can become lame and may even shed its hooves. Eating becomes painful, and many animals
often go off feed, which results in weight loss, declined milk production for dairy cattle and goats, and declined meat
production. Uncooked meat and some types of milk products from contaminated animals can carry the virus. However,
since the virus does not affect humans and would be destroyed when products are cooked, the primary risk of raw products
is transmission of the virus to susceptible animals.

People may be divided into two types : winners and losers . Because our families and friends have a great influence on
us as we grow, we are born helpless and dependent on our environment . Winners are able to change their situation and
become independent by being responsible for their own lies1 They don’t blame others for their mistakes1 They do their own
thinking, they listen to others, evaluate what they say, and then they make up their minds. Although they may fail at times,
yet they keep self-confidence . Winners overcome their bad experiences. They enjoy work, play, food and the world of
nature..
They freely enjoy themselves but they can postpone it if duty calls. Losers, on the other hand never learn to take
responsibility for their own lives. There are many causes why people can become losers: disease , poor nutrition, cruelty,
unhappy relationships and bad experiences. These can interfere with the normal progress towards becoming a winner. But
whereas winners fight theses situations, losers hang on to them, and use them as excuses. Losers usually feel anxious,

Many people have been recently discussing the use of seat belts while driving their cars. Although seat belts have been
shown to save lives, people give a number of reasons for not using them. First, many people think that they are a nuisance,
They say that the belt is uncomfortable and inhibits freedom of movement. Second, many people are lazy. For them, it is
too much trouble to put on and adjust a seat belt, especially if they are only going a short distance. Third, many people
believe they will not have an accident because they are clever and careful drivers. They think that they are able to avoid
accidents. Finally, some people are worried the seat belts may trap them in their cars and prevent them from running away.
If they have an accident, they may not be able to get out of a car that is burning, or they may be unconscious. In spite of all
these reasons, statistics prove that wearing seat belts saves lives and prevents serious injuries.

sign languages without words.
Today , people who are deaf or mute make even greater use of sign language. Though they may never be able to
speak or hear they can understand each other by gestures or hand signals. Signs are as good as words. In African jungles,
drum messages warn people against dangers. In Canary Islands a whistling language passes messages among sailing
boats. In cities, of course, traffic lights; red, yellow and green control vehicles and people. They give to them different
instructions without words.
Shaking hands and bowing show that we are friendly to each other. Gestures which mean Yes or No are most

On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 8.9-9 megathrust earthquake off the north eastern coast of Japan triggered a large
tsunami, with wave heights reaching up to 10m. These two events caused widespread devastation and destruction in Japan,
including washing away entire cities as well as damaging the country's nuclear power plants, thus causing potential
meltdowns geologists, physicists and planetary scientists have began an ample campaign to determine what went wrong
with the tectonic plates that ruptured during the magnitude 9.0 disaster.
“Japan’s earthquake early warning system undoubtedly saved thousands of lives, and will reduce the long-term impact
of the earthquake on the economy,” said Allen, who has been working for nearly a decade to develop and test an
earthquake early warning system in the United States1 “A similar system in California could provide as much as a minute
warning – and in Washington, as much as two-to-three minutes’ warning – so that some actions, many of them automated,
can be taken before the destructive waves (of shaking) arrive1” Modern sea walls failed to protect coastal towns from
Japan’s destructive tsunami last month1 But in the hamlet of Aneyoshi, a single centuries-old tablet saved the day.
Professor Iain Stewart examines the powerful geological forces that unleashed the devastating Japanese earthquake,
and explores how the release of this power of the planet brought Japan to the brink of a nuclear meltdown. Japan is sitting
on enough untapped geothermal power to replace all its planned nuclear stations over the next decade.

sailed. It seemed that the sea had no end. Food and water ran out. The men became so weak that they could hardly stand.
Many were sick; some died.
Later , they sighted islands. There they found food and water. On one of the islands they had war with the natives.
