 in 1871 with the need for a rail connection
 between the Wheeling, West Virginia coal
 fields and Lake Erie port cities and facilities.
 W&LE has become a successful Ohio regional

 We handles many thousands of carloads of
 industrial minerals and coal. Shipments in
 covered hoppers include pulverized limestone,
 cement, and frac sand. Coal shipments move
 in open top hoppers.

The Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad Company handles
thousands of carloads of grain and food products every
year for over fifteen shippers and receivers.
Shipments include unit trains of corn, soybeans,
and wheat; canned goods; frozen fruit and vegetables;
flour for bakeries; animal feed including soybean meal,
corn, bone meal, and liquid whey; food grade corn used
in snack food production; and food grade oils.
Equipment used includes box cars, refrigerated box cars, covered
hoppers, and tank cars.
