In celebration of National Space Day, which is held in May each year, In Our Schools features the
Richland One Challenger Learning Center! Serving students throughout our state, the Richland
One Challenger Learning Center is an exciting, hands-on simulated space science environment
where students and educators work in teams to solve real-life math, science and technology problems
during a space flight simulation.
The Challenger Learning Center was established as a living memorial to the heroes of the Challenger
51-L crew and opened in February of 1996. Located near W.A. Perry Middle School in Columbia, the
center is a stand-alone facility and the 26th of its kind in the national Challenger Center Network.
This In Our Schools edition takes viewers on a simulation with students from Richland County
School District Two’s North Springs Elementary School and Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary
School. We see the student crews use innovative curriculum materials, working in an environment
conducive to problem-solving, teamwork and sharing information on their simulated mission. Please
make sure elementary and middle school science teachers know about this special program!

ITV Link for 2011–12: Need Count & Alert School Staff
IMPORTANT: Please help us determine how many copies of the NEW ITV Link you need for
ALL your teachers, including special area teachers. The ITV Link is the educator’s guide to video-
based resources and a copy is printed for each teacher. The purpose of this publication is to provide
educators with information they need to identify and access resources available through ITV and
ETV.
Fax the form on page 27 by June 3 to let us know your updated count for 2011–12 or e-mail the
information to Bonnie McMurray in ITV at mcmurray@scetv.org. It is important that we know how
many copies you need for all your teachers so we make sure that we print enough to begin with and
we send you the number you need. Thank you for providing this information by June 3.
ALERT YOUR ADMINISTRATION AND CUSTODIAL STAFF: Copies of the 2011–12 ITV Link will
be distributed to media specialists in early to mid August through your local DES personnel or sent
directly to each school in marked boxes or large envelopes. It is important that you alert your
administration and custodial staff that these packages will be coming. Please plan a place to put them
when they are delivered to your school so they will be where you know they are when you return.

ITV New School Year Packet
A packet containing a “boat load” of new information about resources, registration materials for fall
ITV recertification courses and flyers on new programming will be sent to each media specialist and
DES by mid August. Important news from ITV and ETV will be included so please open immediately!

ITV Resources Book, Web Site, Monthly ITV Update
 ITV Resources book - The complete resources book lives on the Web! This is the same
informational resource (but updated!) that you have used for years. It is still alive and well, but
only accessed online. Please access this by the start of the new school year and remember that
you are welcome to print hard copies from the Web as needed.
 ITV Web site - Individual lesson titles, exact duration lengths and schedules can be found on the
ITV Web site www.itv.scetv.org. This site has the most current information.
 ITV Update – Programming additions, including the many teleconferences for students and
teachers, will continue to be provided in the monthly ITV Update sent in hard copy to library media
specialists, principals, district media coordinators, and district superintendents. Many of the
national offerings do not announce their schedule in time to be included in the ITV Link or online
ITV Resources book. Therefore, they are announced monthly in the ITV Update, which is posted
on the Web by the 25th of the preceding month. So, you don’t have to wait on it to arrive by “snail
mail.” Check the ITV Web site at the end of the month, access the word version and e-mail key
    information to your teachers!

Summer 2011 ITV Recertification Courses – Post Info!
Please cut and post the info on the summer courses found on the last pages of this update
or access the flyer posted on the ITV Web site to send to your teachers. Thank you!
All content and registration information can be found on the ITV Web site at www.itv.scetv.org.
Look on home page for big heading! All courses require online registration. Registration is
limited due to class size so please encourage teachers to register early.
Registration deadline for all courses is June 10. Please let your teachers know to register
now! If teachers have questions after checking the ITV Web site, please contact Bonnie
    McMurray in ITV at mcmurray@scetv.org, (803) 737-3350 or 1-877-885-5272.

IMPORTANT: K–12 Instructional Media Channel (IMC)
The ETV satellite service will end July 2011. South Carolina schools and
districts will be able to access the ITV and ETV programs/series that have been
provided on digital satellite channels 1 and 2 by IP delivery through
OnePlaceSC, ETV’s Educational Portal, on the NEW K–12 Instructional Media
Channel (IMC).
So…through the OnePlaceSC and StreamlineSC, South Carolina educators will
continue to have access to video-based programs to support teaching and
learning. These quality resources for K–12 students and professional
development offerings for educators - provided in partnership from ETV and the
SC Department of Education - will still be “at your fingertips!”

Here’s how this NEW delivery works!
 As of March 2011, this new channel of ITV and ETV programming can be accessed from
OnePlaceSC.org – http://oneplacesc.org. Use the same user name and password that you use
    to access StreamlineSC.
 Once you access the TV Guide, you'll now find programs for K–12 and professional development
programs on a channel called the K–12 Instructional Media Channel (IMC). The IMC will be the
channel 4 slot listed as K–12 IMC. (On other channels you’ll find ETV-HD, The SC Channel
    (SCC) and ETV World.)
 Use the TV search by entering a key word to search relevant programs on all channels. After you
find what you need, contact your media specialist or local district Digital Education Service (DES)
personnel, asking them to record. A DES link can be found under the ETV TV guide at the top of
the OnePlaceSC page http://www.scetv.org/education/des/contacts.cfm. These great folks
are your link to this technology and they can let you know how to get the program(s) to your
    classroom.
 If you would prefer some training, ETV can provide that too! Please contact ETV at 800-277-3245
or visit http://oneplacesc.org for all the contact information.

SPECIAL NOTES:
 The 12 school districts that have not yet been migrated to IP delivery will be fitted for
reception by ETV’s Educational Technology. Call 1-800-922-4848 for information.
 Please watch for more information on this new service in your ITV New School Year Packet that
will arrive in your schools in August.

Please use it and share! If you have questions, contact Dean at dbyrd@scetv.org.

Previews on K–12 IMC – NEW Schedule Starts August 1
Schedule for “Special ITV Previews” on K–12 IMC will be posted on Web by August 8

provided in the ITV schedule though ETV’s digital satellite by IP delivery through OnePlaceSC on the
NEW K–12 Instructional Media Channel (IMC) since ETV’s satellite service ends in July 2011.
Right now a schedule of ITV/ETV programs is being delivered on the K–12 IMC and a new

on the ITV Web site at www.itv.scetv.org by August 8. Information on the schedule will be included
in the ITV New School Year Packet, but you will NOT receive a separate printed document with the
complete schedule. (Schedule for a separate “SPLASH Week” will be in the September ITV Update.)
As soon as the preview schedule is ready, ITV will print one hard copy for each DES and mail it to
them. Media Specialists are asked to access the complete preview schedule from the ITV Web site.

Kids in the Courtroom – NEW from ITV and ETV!
Repeats May 9, 9:00–9:37 a.m. Channel 1 (Unlimited rights) Access online in SL and Educator+
Each year the Lexington Police Department of Lexington, SC pairs children and teens with actual
court personnel to participate in a courtroom trial. Called Kids in the Courtroom, this event has
become so popular that participants wanting to be involved are often put on a waiting list! Each trial
has a fairy tale character accused of a crime. For our ITV production of Kids in the Courtroom,
which allows ITV and ETV to share the components of a courtroom experience with students across
the state, our main character “Cinderella” is accused of shoplifting slippers.
Kids in the Courtroom is good for upper elementary, middle and high students. The program helps
students learn about law and order as both the crime investigation, including an interrogation, and the
courtroom proceedings are shown as if actually occurring. Real police officers investigate and testify.
Legal terms and job duties of courtroom personnel are explained throughout the courtroom trial.

landscape that is South Carolina. ITV repeats these two programs for SC schools.
 Carolina Stories - Uncommon Folk
May 9, 10:00–10:57 a.m. Channel 1 Also available online in StreamlineSC
Repeats May 16, 10:00–10:57 a.m. Channel 1 (Unlimited rights)
There are many unique artists in SC who fall outside the normal definition of “artist.” Sometimes
lumped into the categories of “folk,” “outsider,” “self-taught,” or “visionary,” these artists are driven to
create. This program focuses on a few of these folk artists, looking at their work, their visions and
their history. Included are Maxie Eades – the Bowl Digger; Rev. Johnnie Simmons – a Gullah
woodburner; Ernest Lee – The Chicken Man; and Margaret Robbins – a Catawba potter. This
program aired for the first time on ETV in March 2011 and was directed and edited by Lynn Cornfoot.
 Carolina Stories - Jail, No Bail
Repeats May 6, 8:30–8:58 a.m. Channel 1 (Unlimited rights) Access online in StreamlineSC
On January 31, 1961, ten black students from Friendship College walked into McCrory’s Five and
Dime in downtown Rock Hill, SC. They sat down at the lunch counter to order burgers and drinks.
They were denied service and told to leave. When they refused, they were arrested and charged with
trespassing. In previous sit-ins across the South, protestors were arrested, processed by the police,
fined, and then released, creating a dubious revenue stream from which municipalities easily profited.
But when the Friendship students went before the judge, they chose to serve their time behind bars.
For the first time, not only did the city not collect money from the accused, but it actually had to pay to
house and feed the men. Word of this action spread and received national attention. The “Jail, No
Bail” strategy became the new tactic that helped galvanize the civil rights protest movement. Actor
Keith David narrates the documentary that was produced by the staff at ETV Carolinas.

ETV’s The Big Picture
Produced by ETV, this weekly series provides an in-depth look at the issues and topics of interest to

scholarship for each program.
*You are invited to apply to ITV for a scholarship for one CWEFT program in 2011–12.
The scholarship for one program entitles your school to receive the excellent teacher materials and
participate online/via telephone during the live program. You may also keep the recording of the
program for the life of the tape/DVD. If you have never received a scholarship, send your name,
school, district, and @ number of students using program to mcmurray@scetv.org by September 9,

Web Talk with Michelle Flamos
Spring Greetings! With spring comes change and so too are we changing. We
can recall when ITV programs were delivered on open circuit; then schools
could record programs on VHS tape; next satellite delivery and DVD format
came on the scene … NOW we deliver programs that are segmented and
correlated to standards via the Internet for just-in-time access. All this to say
                         that change isn’t all bad.
As you know the satellite will cease July 31. But not to worry … the resources you use from ITV and ETV will be
delivered in an alternate delivery mode. We have created a new channel named the K–12 Instructional Media
Channel (IMC) that utilizes part of the digital broadcast spectrum. For most of you access is just a click away with the
assistance of the TV Guide within OnePlaceSC. For those few districts without IP delivery systems, access to this
channel can be achieved in the same way that you accessed the old ITFS channel. (ETV’s Educational Technology
Technicians will visit your school to set this up.) In August, we encourage you to please pay special attention to the
ITV New School Year Packet as it will contain pertinent information related to the new channel. Also, it may be wise to
periodically visit our website for up-to-date information on the subject and access a plethora of additional useful
information. As always, contact us any time! Email is the best way to reach me (mflamos@scetv.org), but I can also
be reached at 803-737-0951. Have a great summer all. See you next school year!

                         Media Specialist and DES Friends…
We appreciate your assistance in disseminating information and your work to help your teachers use
ITV/ETV video-based resources. Your input is invaluable to us as we work to provide quality K–12 and
professional development resources for our SC schools.
While you are taking a break this summer, please check the ITV Web site at www.itv.scetv.org to see

Contact ITV or ETV if you have questions. We are here all summer except for a little needed vacation!
Again…Thank you for ALL your work every day to support education. We would not be successful
without you. Your dedication is very much appreciated. Our best wishes for a safe and happy, well-
deserved break and we all look forward to working with you in the next school year!

treachery and villainy that occurred off the coast of South Carolina during the Golden Age of Piracy.

relevance to South Carolina today.

SC Chronicles Series II: The Winds of Discontent
This one-hour recertification course showcases ITV and ETV produced resources about South
Carolina to assist educators in learning about our state’s history. Noted South Carolina historian Dr.
Walter Edgar will discuss three key issues in early SC History: The Winds of Discontent in SC, The
American Revolution in the Low Country and The American Revolution in the Up Country. Learn
about Francis Marion's partisan campaigns during the American Revolution in SC and the historical
importance of the Battle of Camden. You will also view new programs about heroines in our state who
have shaped South Carolina history and politics and virtually visit sites around the Palmetto State and
learn about their historic and special relevance to South Carolina today.

The SC Chronicles Series of one-hour courses will enhance the understanding of SC history and add
a repertoire of material to use in the classroom. The video sessions will focus on integrating SC
history into the social studies curriculum. As participants gain a greater understanding of South
Carolina history, they will be able to teach state curriculum standards with an updated historical
knowledge of South Carolina history.

All class meetings will take place through distance learning. The instructor and participants will
communicate via Moodle — the course platform on the Internet. Assignments and discussion forums
will be facilitated in Moodle. Most of the requirements are to view the sessions and then respond to
questions about the session or how you plan to use the information in your teaching.
