ENG 153: Introduction to Women Authors sec. 2: MW 10:20-12:10 314 Berkey Hall Instructor: Aryn Bartley Email: email@example.com Office Hrs: Thursdays, 1:00 - 2:30, in the cyber cafe in the MSU library and by appt. Welcome to ENG 153! During this class we will be exploring texts by women authors and directors. To start, we will ask what it means for women to write. As we reflect on and discuss the course texts, we will talk about further topics like societal roles, body image and production, socialization, sexuality, and gender. We will discuss how reception and publication demands might affect the production and history of women’s literature. Finally, we will look at how the form and style of each text influences the story it tells and how we understand those stories. As readers and writers, each student will be expected to reflect on their own interactions with the themes, styles and goals of the writers we study both in discussion and in written assignments. Disruptive behavior will also harm your participation grade (not that I expect to have any problem with this!). Every class period will have a break. You may, however, miss three class periods with no penalty to your grade. After three, your final grade in the course will drop by 0.25 for each missed class. Use these absences wisely (for emergencies, sports trips, religious holidays, etc.) I do not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences. If you are absent, go to ANGEL for handouts, announcements, etc. I will also put up interesting links, files, etc. on ANGEL. Late papers will be penalized by 0.25 increments for each calendar day they are late. Late papers may be turned in to my mailbox in the English Department (Rm 211 Morrill Hall). You must send me an email alerting me when you have turned in something late. If you do not send an email, the paper will be marked down based on when I find it in my box! Critical Essays and Short Story: You will receive prompts to these assignments at least two weeks before they are due. You will have the opportunity of “publishing” your short story on Angel for your classmates. Format for writing assignments: Type, staple, and creatively title all assignments. Number and put your last name at the top right corner of all pages. Double space, use Times New Roman or Arial 12 point font, 1.25” left/right margins and 1” top/bottom margins. Quizzes: There will be 8 reading quizzes throughout the semester. On each quiz, one question will be a blank space where you will insert a comment or discussion question about something interesting/bizarre/noteworthy in the text we will have read for that day – either a formal, stylistic, or thematic concern. You will be able to make up one quiz by going to a related talk, play, film, etc. and writing a one-page summary and response. I will announce these make-up opportunities, but please feel free to suggest them. Participation: This is a discussion-based course, and your active participation is critical for its success. At times you will have short preparatory or in-class assignments that will count toward your participation grade. Last Day of Class: On the last day of class, each class participant will “present” a woman writer to the class. Please prepare a short (1 min) introduction to the work and/or writer, and read a brief excerpt from her work. The purpose of this day is to enjoy literature with “no strings attached” and direct each other to favorites. Feel free to bring food! Final Exam: The final exam will cover material from the entire semester. It will consist of quote identifications, short answers about factual material, and an essay. You must bring a blue book! Blue books are available at bookstores for less than $1.00 and at ASMSU in Student Services for free. The final exam will take place on Tuesday, May 1st from 10am-12 noon in 314 Berkey Hall. Academic Honesty and Plagiarism: According to Article 2.3.3 of the Academic Freedom Report, “the student shares the responsibility for maintaining the integrity of scholarship, grades and professional standards.” English 153 adheres to the policies on academic honesty as specified in General Student Regulations 1.0 on the Protection of Scholarship and grades, and in the all-University Policy on Integrity of Scholarship and Grades. Plagiarism consists of taking words or ideas from an outside source without properly acknowledging the source, or submitting a paper written (in part or in full) by someone else. Students who plagiarize will fail the course. If you have any confusion about plagiarism, please come speak with me or go to http://www.msu.edu/unit/ombud/dishonestystud.html before the papers are due.
